The relationship between mortality and hospitalization time and procalcitonin level in patiants with infection in intansive care unit.

Abstract (EN)
Intensive care unit (ICU) patients have a high percentage of mortality. This mortality rates continue when the patients are discharged form the ICU. Infection is one of the leading reason increasing mortality in ICU. Analyzing the severity of illness and its consequences on the critical patients and determining the infection or other risk factors affecting mortality is essential for the clinician. To predict mortality and determine the risk factors, scoring systems and biomarkers are used. This study is planned to investigate the relationship between the APACHE II score, serum procalsitonin (PCT) values on the day the patient is admitted with ICU length of stay, the mortality while the patient is in the ICU and the mortality within the first 30 and 90 days after the patient is discharged. In addition, the relation between the mortality during the time in the ICU and within the first 30 and 90 days after discharge is investigated by age, gender, focus of infection, additional diseases, hemoglobin, white blood cell, thrombocyte count, sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, 25-OH-vitamin D, mean platelet volume, calcium and phosphorus values. In this study, 52 patients, with diagnosis of infection, admitted to Düzce University Hospital İnternal Medicine ICU between September 1st 2011 and August 30th 2012 are taken prospectively. Patients who are pregnant or under 18 are not included in this study. The study revealed that the focus of infection is related to the ICU and the mortality risk within the first 30 and 90 days after discharge. Although age is not a risk factor for mortality in ICU, it is a meaningful risk factor among the patients who could not survive in the 30 and 90 day period. It is shown that the APACHE II score is related to the mortality rates in the 30 day period after being discharged. and PCT is not related to ICU length of stay and ICU mortality, the mortality within the 30 and 90 day periods.
