Examination of high-performance criteria in terms of family and corporate companies: TR81 example

Corporate companies are considered to be more sustainable than family businesses. Investigating the causes of this situation, identifying weakness and suggestion solutions, are important for both companies and academia. Experienced experiences have been applied to understand the impact of differences on life experiences, working conditions, managers and outcome. The purpose of this study is to reveal the performance differences between family companies and institutional enterprises and to present the results to the decision makers and researchers. In order to achieve this purpose, some 284 companies operating in Zonguldak, Bartın and Karabük, which belong to TR81 region, were surveyed with the high-performance organization (HPO) scale developed by De Waal (2009). The analysis of company performance includes statistical hypothesis tests using survey data conducted to the managers or decision makers of the company. According to the analysis findings, differences of opinion were observed between family and corporate companies on 25 issues in five dimensions. Institutional enterprises scored 23 items higher than family enterprises. In terms of dimensions, it has been observed that institutional enterprises give more importance to the issues of "Openness and Orientation", "Management Quality" and "Employee Quality" dimensions in general and predominantly. It can be said that institutional enterprises tend to give more importance in "Continuity-Development" and "Long-Term Planning" dimensions. Thus, it can be stated that institutional enterprises operate with higher performance in terms of HPO scale. It is decided that family companies should improve themselves or take on an institutional structure, especially in the issues listed in this study and where they are weak.
