Evaluation of higher education dormitories in terms of fire safety; example of Mersin province

In the first part of the research, the historical development of the student dormitories was explained and the requirements of the dormitories, dormitory sections and plan types examples were discussed. The room types of some dormitories operating in the world and (in) Turkey were examined. In the second part of the research, the definition of combustion was made and the components that make up the fire; the types of combustion of the heat formed; the classification of the fire and the events of the fire were described together with the literature review. In the third part of the research, the difference between fire safety measures in buildings was explained and passive and active systems were explained together with samples. In the forth part of the research, short introductions are made about the dormitory buildings examined in this research and their placements on the overall layout, the introductory sheet for the dormitory building, the schematics for the bedroom floors are shown along with the examination of the fire escapes, the stairs, escape halls, system details, and panic bar doors. The furniture, lighthing fixtures, detectors, and sprinklers are covered through the room layouts and ceiling plans. The fire cabinets are identified and marked both on-site and on the architectural project, and each dormitory is identified by the photos taken. The dormitories that were subject to the research are Kırkkaşık Sorority House, Mersin Sorority House, Mersin-Yenişehir Fraternity House, and Erdemli Kız Kalesi Dormitory. In the fifth part of the research; according to the articles regarding the escape halls in the Regulation on the Protection of Buildings from Fire, the escape halls of the dormitory buildings were examined using the tabulation. The examination revealed that although the escape halls mainly adhere to the regulations, there were missing items.
