A comparative study on the story of Zaloğlu Rüstem

ABSTRACT Shahnameh is one of the important sources of Turkish literature. Shahnameh, which has a tremendous place among world classics, is known as a heroic epic. In the work, the period from the establishment of the Iranian kingdom to the end of the Sassanid dynasty is handled. Starting from Keyümers III. The lives and wars of fifty rulers up to Yazdcird are told. It has an epic narrative. The work, which includes names such as Dahhak, Gâve, Feridun, Efrasiyâb, Keykâvus, Keyhüsrev, İsfendiyar, Zâloğlu Rüstem, is a cultural treasure. Zâloğlu Rüstem is one of the Persian national heroes who have an important place for Iranian and Turkish literature. The individual example of the story belonging to Zâloğlu Rüstem, whose life is the subject of legends and included in the heroic narratives, was obtained from the Manuscripts section of the National Library of France. This manuscript has been translated into Latin letters by me. Turkish variants of the work were determined and similar and different motifs were tried to be revealed with the copy. In this direction, the comparative method was used by making use of Stith Thompson's Folk Literature Motif Index. The absence of any independent study on the Zâloğlu Rüstem episode, which is known for having extraordinary features in Turkish Folk Literature, has led us to work on this subject. The study consists of an introduction, two main sections, a dictionary, a bibliography and an index. In the introduction, the concept of epic, the life of Firdevsî, the sources and translations of the Shahnameh, the Shahnameh and the place of Rüstem in Turkish literature are mentioned. In the first part, the story variants that deal with the same subject as the story in the manuscript are introduced and the summaries of the stories are given. In addition, by giving the motif order of the variants examined, the places of the motifs in the Motif Index of Folk Literature are shown. In the second part, the manuscript we obtained from the National Library of France and the oral variant, which is the narrative of Bekir Eşrefligil, which we determined, are included. The study is completed with conclusion, glossary, bibliography and index. In the last part, the facsimile of the work is included. Keywords: Shahnameh, Zâloğlu Rustem, Motif, Epic
