Analysis of Zülfü Livaneli films with auteur theory and transsional approach

The aim of this thesis is to review the four films of the well known, versatile artist Zülfü Livaneli, in which he has not only taken part as director but composer and scriptwriter as well, through the fundamentals of Autheur Theory and to analyze the prominent character relations in these films, by following up the Drama Triangle Theory which was turned into an instrument of psychotheraphy bu transactional analyst Stephen B. Karpman. The movies included in the scope of this thesis are Iron Earth Copper Sky (1987), Mist (1988), Shahmaran (1993) and Veda (2010) respectively. Whilst the developments within the historical process which led up to the birth of Autheur Theory were discussed in the first part, the fundamentals and principles of the theory were described in the second part. Besides here, after the criticism directed at auteurism was briefly treated, the development process of auteurism in Turkey was examined. The third part was focused on evaluating and understanding the concept of 'inner dramatic action' which creates the dramatic event, by seeing it from a different perspective. Within this part, in the light of the information obtained by the psychoanalythic theory Transactional Analysis, a method was proposed for analyzing films, based on the usage of the Karpman Drama Triangle, which can be evaluated as an extention to this theory. And in the last part Livaneli's relation with auteurism was reviewed firstly and then his films were criticized and analyzed. Whilst the critiques were made from an auteurist perspective, some important character relations and the functional role transformations of the characters within those relations were analyzed by using the drama model Karpman proposed.
