Uluslararası Bakalorya Diploma Programı İngilizce puanları İngilizce yeterlilik sınavı puanları ve ÖSS puanları arasındaki ilişki: Bir korelasyon çalışması

English language teaching has become one of the most inseparable parts of Turkish National Education Curriculum. With the emergence of international programs such as International Baccalaureate, International General Certificate of Secondary Education and Advanced Placement English language teaching and language proficiency gained new perspectives in Turkey and around the world. While the English curriculum in Turkish national system focuses on receptive and productive skills; reading, listening, writing and speaking, the curriculum of international programs focus more on critical thinking skills in the target language. The question of how well a student who received IB Diploma Programme English education can perform in a standardized English proficiency test which focuses on critical thinking skills rather than four skills remains unanswered in Turkish context. This study aimed to explore the relationship between IB DP English scores, a standardized English test scores (COPE) and student Selection Examination (OSS) scores of Bilkent Erzurum Laboratory School graduates. This study was completed by using the IB DP English, COPE and SSE scores of 119 students as instruments. The data were analysed with correlational analysis approach. Statistically significant relationships were discovered between COPE exam scores and IB predicted grades. Keywords: International Baccalaureate, Diploma Program, Language Proficiency, English education, COPE exam, Student Selection Examination.

Yüksek öğrenime giriş sınavının bilgisayar ortamında bireyselleştirilmiş test ve kağıt kalem testi formatlarından elde edilen puanlarının karşılaştırılması

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of computerized adaptive testing (CAT) format as an alternative to the paper and pencil (P&P) test of thestudent selection examination (SSE) in Turkey. The scores obtained from both P&P format of the SSE and CAT through post-hoc simulations were compared using science subtest items. Different test termination rules (fixed length and fixed standard error) and ability estimation methods (EAP and MLE) were used to operate the CAT version of the SSE P&P test. 10, 15 and 25 items were used as fixed length test and standard errors of 0.30, 0.20 and 0.10 were used as fixed standard error thresholds in terms of test termination rules. Results indicated significant correlations between scores from SSE and CAT. The comparisons between results obtained from CAT and P&P tests also revealed that there exists similar ability distributions and significant reduction in the number of items used through CAT. The findings from the research showed that CAT could calculate reliability using fewer items than P&P test. This study suggests that CAT can be an alternative to SSE with comparable scores to P&P format. Key words: CAT, computerized adaptive testing, science achievement, student selection

Uluslararası Bakalorya Programı ve Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı ilköğretim programlarının ilköğretim 4.sınıf öğrencilerinin kesirler konusundaki kavram yanılgılarına dayanarak karşılaştırılması

The purpose of this study was to compare the misconceptions of fractions in IB Primary Years Program (IBPYP) to the misconceptions of fractions of Ministry of National Education (MoNE) 4th grade students. To measure this, the three most popular subtopics of fractions covered in 4th grade mathematics curriculum were selected. These subtopics were (1) partitioning, (2) ordering and (3) addition. Then, nine questions for each subtopics were developed. Accordingly, a fractions test that included 27 items total was developed and used in this research. Analyses were conducted to determine if different curricula cause any response patterns. Analysis showed that only 7 out of 27 items were answered statistically differently by the IBPYP and MoNE students. PYP students had higher correct answer and lower misconception rates in 6 out of these 7 items. However, in general, the correct answer and wrong answer patterns seemed to have no substantial difference across the two curricula. Also, the results proved that some fractions subtopics were more challenging for students than others. Some suggestions about how to address misconceptions were made in the present study. Key words: Mathematics education, misconceptions, fractions, IBPYP, MoNE primary mathematics education.

Problem solving, which is one of the 21st century skills, is a targeted skill to gain by students in schools. However, problem solving is not taught as a separate lesson. Teachers should integrate this skill into their lessons and encourage their students to improve this skill. Therefore, teachers and students themselves have a major role in developing students' problem solving competency. In this study, the relationship between teacher and student related factors and students' problem solving skill as perceived by students were analysed both throughout Turkey and across school types. While conducting the study, PISA 2012 data was used and the analysis was done with the multiple linear regression method. According to the results of the study, there are statistically significant relationships between student and teacher related factors and problem solving skill. It was observed that the related factors are differed across the school types.

Öğrencilerin matematik okuryazarlığını etkileyen faktörlerin PISA 2012 verilerine göre kültürler arası incelenmesi

The main purpose of this study is to determine factors affecting mathematics literacy level of participating countries based on the framework of Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012. In this study, the dependent variable was the mathematics literacy scores whereas the independent variables were index scores of factors i.e. mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics self-concept, teacher-student relations, index of economic, social and cultural status, mathematics teacher's classroom management, mathematics anxiety, attitude towards school: learning outcomes, attitude towards school: learning activities, sense of belonging to school, and mathematics interest. The data were first analysed using multiple linear regression for three different achievement strata of countries (high-, normal- and low-achieving). Then using the standardized regression coefficients, three separate cluster analyses were conducted to group the countries within each group. At the end of the study, a general framework of the relationship between factors of index scores and mathematics literacy scores were obtained. The results of this framework showed that mathematics self-efficacy, index of economic, social and cultural status, mathematics interest and mathematics anxiety did not indicate distinguishing properties among countries' groups. In general, variable of sense of belonging to school had negative relationship with mathematic achievement in high-achieving countries as teacher-students relations indicate negative relationship with mathematics achievement in low-achieving countries' groups.

Türkiye'de cinsiyet ve öğrenci başarısı: PISA 2012 verisine göre okul türleri ve bölgeler arası farklılıklar

Gender inequality has always been a major global issue in all fields. Unfortunately, we are living in a world that is still dealing with this persistent problem, the core of which is primarily education. According to global indexes and surveys, Turkey is almost always well below the world average in ensuring gender equality. In this sense, this study uses PISA 2012 data to explore whether the student achievement differs in Turkey between female and male students. The relationship between student achievement and several variables i.e. Teacher Student Relations, Attitude Towards School: Learning Outcomes, Attitude Towards School: Learning Activities, and Sense of Belonging to School was also examined. Two control variables were included in the analyses conducted: geographical regions and school types, in addition to the above-mentioned school related variables. The results indicate that there are no major gaps between genders; yet, school types equally affect both genders dramatically. Geographical regions only contribute to the between-schools differences; while school related variables, make no difference in Turkish students' achievement levels. The results also show that higher level of variables should be considered as evidenced by the variation between school types before focusing on teaching-level variables. In this context, Turkish educational system should shift its focus from gender as the primary issue to the immense variances between schools in order to ensure a better education that will result in higher averages.
