The effects of maternal and other obesity related factors on body mass index among 2-6 years old private kindergarten preschoolers
Aydın, S. (2021). The Effects of Maternal and Other Obesity Related Factors on Body Mass Index Among 2-6 Years Old Private Kindergarten Preschoolers. Yeditepe University, Institute of Health Science, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Master Thesis, Istanbul. Childhood obesity has become an increasingly important global problem. It is associated with some factors and if these factors can be intervened, its prevalence and incidence may be decreased. In preschool-age children, especially mothers are the role models of their children and responsible from their nutrition. Maternal feeding practices and other parent-controlled factors associated with obesity may have an impact on the child's development of obesity. This study aimed to examine whether maternal factors including breastfeeding, employment status, cooking at home and, other factors related to childhood obesity such as physical activity, stress factor and watching television affect the body mass index (BMI) percentile of preschool children, and to examine mothers' child feeding practices. 193 preschoolers, including girls (n=106) and boys (n=87) from four private kindergartens in Istanbul, and their mothers participated in the study. According to the results, there was a weak, positive relationship between maternal BMI and child's BMI percentile (r=0.263, p<0.05). There was a significant relationship between child's BMI percentile and daily TV watching time (p<0.05). There was a significant relationship between child's BMI percentile and the mother's thoughts if their children has excessive weight (p<0.05). Perceived child weight mean score of children with overweight BMI is significantly higher than the mean score of children with normal BMI (p<0.05). Mothers are effective on nutrition and weight of their children. Some child feeding practices and other factors also affect the BMI percentile of preschool children. Future studies can be conducted among mothers on feeding practices and how much they prefer which food groups. The relationship between food insecurity and obesity in university employees
Food insecurity is the lack of availability or access to healthy food due to limited resources or insufficient money. It is a nutritional factor associated with obesity in low-income individuals. This study was conducted among 142 employees of a private university between January 2020 and October 2020 to examine the relationship between food insecurity and obesity. Data was collected with Household Food Security Survey Module- Short Form (HFSSM-SF) and anthropometric measurements were recorded as well as socio-demographic characteristics including sex, age, educational and marital status, number of children, income level, and physical activity. 39.4% of the participants were overweight and 21.8% were obese. 64.1% of the individuals were food secure and 35.9% were food insecure. There was no statistically significant relationship between body mass index (BMI) classes and both food accessibility levels and food security status. (p >0.05). There was no statistically significant relationship between waist circumference categories and both food accessibility levels and food security status (p >0.05). There was a weakly significant positive relationship between the BMI and HFFSM-SF score (r: 0.219; p <0.01). There was no significant relationship between the HFFSM-SF score and waist circumference (cm) (p> 0,05). The findings of this study showed that there was no significant relationship between food insecurity and obesity. However, it was observed that as the BMI of the participants increased, the risk of access to food increased. In addition, food insecurity of employees was found to be substantial. It has utmost importance to carry out the necessary investigations and provide support to prevent the food insecurity experienced by the employees. Studies in larger populations are needed to better understand the level of food insecurity and the relationship between food insecurity and obesity. İzmir'de özel bir çocuk sağlığı ve hastalıkları kliniği'ne başvuran 2-5 yaş grubu çocukların beslenme durumunu etkileyen faktörler
This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting adherences to dietary recommendations of 2 to 5 years old children. Food Frequency Questionnaire, Data Collection Form and Parent Mealtime Action Scale were used. Turkey Dietary Guidelines was used as a reference. Adherences to recommendations for each food group along with 'total dietary recommendations' were analyzed. Of the 132 children, 47.7 % were in poor adherence, 49.2% in good adherence and 3.0 % in excessive intake group. Children with good adherence to dietary recommendations had higher BMI while children with poor adherence were underweight (p=0.037). Children with older sibling (p=0.047) and children having less frequency of eating in front of the screen (p=0.005) had good adherence. Proportion of finding the information obtained from pediatrician as useful (p=0.042) and "daily fruit and vegetable availability" was higher (p=0.046) in parents of children having good adherence. "Use of rewards" (p=0.008) and "special meals"( p=0.018) was found to be higher for parents of children in poor adherence group. As a conclusion, this study shows that some of the child and familial characteristics, infant nutrition, information sources and child feeding practices have an impact on adherence to dietary recommendations. In consideration of this study, caregivers should be educated by the health care providers about these practices.

Turkish version of green eating survey: Validity and reliability
Human activities, including diet patterns, have significant impact on climate change. There are limited scales that include environmental impact of nutrition. In this study, the Green Eating Survey was adapted to Turkish language and culture. Language validation of the Turkish version of the scale was ensured by the translation-back translation method. Professionals were consulted for content validity. Turkish translation of the scale and intercultural adaptation had been completed, the scale was applied to 468 volunteer undergraduate students. In order to evaluate the reliability of the Turkish version of the scale; internal consistency coefficient, test-retest, parallel form methods were applied. As a result of the statistical analyses, it has been proven that Green Eating Survey is a valid and reliable measurement tool for Turkish university students as one of the first scales in Turkey for sustainable nutrition. It was observed that women and the Nutrition and Dietetics students have more knowledge about environmentally conscious eating and prefer sustainable foods (p<0.05). Income level has been evaluated as a determining factor of preference of foods with low environmental impact (p<0.05). It was determined that questions the barriers related to the consumption of sustainable foods, did not differ according to sex, department, or income level (p>0.05). It is recommended to plan interventions aiming at teaching university students about the environmental impact of nutrition and develop policies aiming at increase accessibility in order to ensure the consumption of sustainable foods. In future research, the Green Eating Survey is suitable measurement for Turkish university students.
Evaluation of the effect of food presentation style on taste perception
Taste and palatability of foods are important factors in food intake, but in most cases the first sensory contact with food occurs through sight. It is thought that visual cues can be used to increase the consumption of vegetables and fruits in community nutrition. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of shapes, which are a visual factor, on sweet taste. The study was conducted with 30 volunteers from a foundation university. In order to understand the effect of different shapes on taste perception, angular (square, star) and oval (round) shapes created by using standard patterns were used in three different fruits and vegetables. Participants were asked to evaluate the food they tasted after each tasting while hungry and full. The feeling of hunger and fullness did not cause a significant difference in sweet taste level (p≤0.05). A significant difference was seen only in the star-shaped watermelon, and the star shape was recorded as sweeter when hungry. According to gender, while women and men were affected by different shaped fruits at varying rates (p<0.05), it was seen that women were also affected by vegetables (p<0.05), but no significant difference was found for men (p>0.05). When evaluated according to the age group, the perceived sweet taste in both fruits and vegetables was affected differently in the younger age group (p≤0.05). While there was no significant difference in the taste scores of overweight individuals (p>0.05), the subjects with normal body mass index were affected in different ways (p≤0.05). More studies are recommended on the presentation of vegetables and fruits in interventions for public health. In this way, the consumption of fruits and vegetables offered in different presentation styles can be increased.
Evaluation of nutritional knowledge levels in pre-op and POST-op period of bariatric surgery patients
The aim of this study is to compare the nutritional knowledge level of patients in preoperative and 6.postoperative months and the relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietitian follow-up and weight loss in individuals who applied to the surgical outpatient clinic of a private hospital in Bursa for obesity surgery. The study was conducted with 34 people who meeting the inclusion criteria between January 2019 and June 2019. For determination of the nutritional knowledge levels of individuals, 'General Nutrition Information Questionnaire', was used. Weight and height information as anthropometric properties; as for socio-demographic characteristics, information such as age, gender, marital status, and working status in the last part of the questionnaire were taken. It was determined that the nutritional knowledge level increased at the postoperative 6th month (p<0.05). In contrast to other studies, there was no statistically significant relationship between nutritional information level with age and education level (p>0.05). It was determined that there was more excess body weight loss (EBWL) in the 6th month in individuals who are compatible with the literature and even higher. There was a negative statistically significant relationship between the number of correct in some parts of the nutritional knowledge level questionnaire and the frequency of visits to dieticians (p<0.05). This condition is thought to be caused by patients living outside the city and abroad. With the increase in nutritional information level, it is thought that frequent complications after surgery may be prevented, PEM risk may be reduced and the incidence of vitamin & mineral deficiencies may be reduced. Key words: bariatric surgery, nutritional information level, frequency of dietician visits, ebwl rate, obesity
Detection of obesity in first grade of students enrolled in an elemantary school and effect of 3 months weight change of nutrition education given to the parent
Childhood obesity is that one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. Studies show that obesity prevalence is increasing day by day. There are many factors that cause obesity. However, this study was conducted to measure the obesity of the first-grade primary school students. 154 people participated in that study. Students's families were informed and included in the study. All sections of the school were searched. 65 out of 154 people were found to be overweight and obese. The primary responsible persons of these 65 people were called to the school and a training was given and height- body weight measurements were taken. Only 7 parents have joined to the education. Weight loss was observed in 1 of the 7 students. The fact that the number of volunteer family for education is quite low, the results of the education have taken another direction. After 3 months, children were measured in height and body weight again. Only one student lost weight among 7 students. If parents and teachers work together, the education will be more successful. Teachers need to inform the family and support the process of participation in the education, and the family should be able to participate in the education and use the information acquired in their daily life. The duty of the educator is to organize understandable educations in which the families will want to participate.
Effect of neutropenic diet adherence on malnutrition and duration of hospital stay in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Neutropenic diets (ND) were once considered to be important for the protection of patients from neutropenia when chemotherapy continued. The dietetic difficulties struggling with neutropenic patients include decreased quality of life, inadequate nutrition, long hospitalization duration, gastrointestinal side effects, avoidance of food and cell mediated immunity resulting from vitamin deficiency. This cross-sectional trial evaluated the effect of ND adherence on malnutrition and hospitalization duration in sixty children. 58.3% (n=35) of patients were boys and 41.7% (n=25) of patients were girls who were diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A scoring system has been developed with a diet limitation score for each question. The score increased with the decrease in ND adherence. The adherence rate was 61.7% (n= 37) for the ND. The hospitalization duration was actually significantly lower in the low ND adherence (p=0.027). ND extends the length of stay in the hospital while it does not effect malnutrition status.
Comparison of excess body weight loss and preoperative and postoperative vitamin and mineral status of patients which underwent sleeve gastrectomy operation in a private clinic
The aim of this study is to reveal preoperative micronutrient deficiencies, to investigate micronutrient status of the patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (SG) at postoperative 3rd and 12th months, to track micronutrient status of bariatric patients using multivitamin supplementation and to assess the correlation between percentage of excess body weight loss (EBWL%) and micronutrient status of the patients. This study is based on data collected from an obesity surgery clinic's routine follow-up program. 229 participants' preoperative and postoperative datas are evaluated. Pre- and postoperative anthropometric measurements and biochemical evaluation of certain micronutrients (iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, folic acid, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), hemoglobin, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin B1, biotin and copper). Although all participants supplemented with showed specific multivitamin and mineral twice a day after surgery, postoperative data analyses micronutrient deficiencies. EBWL% is calculated both for postop 3rd and 12th months. And the mean value of EBWL% at both 3rd and 12th months could be classified as successful regarding literature. The major deficiency detected both preoperatively and postoperatively was vitamin D deficiency (preop; 87%, postop 3rd m; 51%, postop 12th m; 51%). Ferritin, folic acid, vitamin B12, copper deficiencies and low serum hemoglobin were significant findings. Prevalence of postop biotin deficiency was unexpectedly high. Postop EBWL% and serum hemoglobin showed negative correlation. Micronutrient deficiencies after SG can be detected even with presence of multivitamin supplementation and monitorization micronutrient levels for detecting such micronutrient deficiency is very an important aspect of postop follow-up procedure.

Key words: Mediterranean diet, Profile of Mood States, Beck Depression Profile, University students.
The effect of nutrition education on mediterranean diet quality index (KIDMED) among adolescents
This study was conducted to evaluate affects of theory based nutrition education on adolescent's (mean age: 12.5±1.1 years, boy/girl=19/21) Mediterranean diet adherence in Pelitköy Halit Selçuk Ortaokulu Balıkesir. Study was conducted with 40 volunteered adolescents between 19th of February 2020 and 22nd of May 2020. Self-administered Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED) used in this study to asses adolescent's Mediterranean diet adherence. Nutrition education program prepared based on Türkiye Beslenme Rehberi 2015 and presented ones during the study. Duration of the education was approximately 60minutes. Social Cognitive Theory was the theoretical framework of the intervention. The intervention has been given via a computer based presentation assistance (Microsoft® PowerPoint®) which was heavily consisted of related images rather then long and elusive sentences. SPSS version 21.0 for Microsoft was used for statistical analysis. No statistically significant difference found in physical activity status and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (F(2,37) = 2.896, p = 0.068) as well as body weight status and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (F(2,37) = 0.925, p = 0.405). On average, there were 0.93 points increase in KIDMED scores after intervention (95% CI [-1.5, -0,34]) which was statistically significant (p=0.003). Intervention achieved to produce significant change towards adolescents breakfast making habits (p≤0.05). As a conclusion study shown that theory based nutrition education interventions has a potential towards increasing MeD adherence of adolescents'. This potential will may strengthen with repetition (frequency) of the education, family participation to the education process, health professionals involvement during preparation and presentation of the education, an enhanced scope (number of participants) and a complementary approach which will also focus on physical activity.
The determination of the malnutrition status during the diagnosis of type 1 diabetic children
The aim of this thesis is to determine the malnutrition status at the time of diagnosis in children diagnosed with T1DM. Accordingly, 72 children diagnosed with type diabetes were studied. In this study, all anthropometric measurements used in the diagnosis of malnutrition such as head weight, upper arm circumference and skin fold thickness as well as body weight and height of children were used. Children, according to their age and gender; 25 and below are grouped as 25th to 75th and 75th percentile range. In addition, the consistency of the data obtained from the STRONGkids screening scale used for malnutrition screening in children was compared. Scores; It is grouped as low risk, medium risk and high risk. The findings showed that malnutrition was the most common in the antrpometric measurements and STRONGkids scoring between the ages of 11-14. There was no significant difference in terms of frequency and severity of malnutrition according to gender, again, children with excess weight as a result of anthropometric measurements showed intensity in this age range. According to anthropometric measurements, it is thought that children who have a high weight but who have a risk of malnutrition according to the STRONGkids scale risk scores carry this risk with T1DM and related weight loss in a short time. This study is a study showing the frequency and severity of malnutrition in children diagnosed with T1DM, and has shown that weight loss, one of the most common symptoms in the pre-diagnosis process, should be considered. There was no significant relationship between sleep quality and waist circumference according to PSQI (p = 0,821, p> 0.05) also there was no significant relationship between sleep quality and breakfast habit (p = 0,310, p> 0.05). Considering that sleep duration and quality are related to many diseases, precautions should be taken to improve sleep quality. Keywords: Breakfast, Sleep Quality, Waist Circumference
Changes in basal metabolic rate of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy patients
The study aimed at exploring changes in basal metabolic rate (BMR) at postoperative first month by using indirect calorimetry in obese patients who undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy as a part of obesity treatment at Bariatric Surgery Clinic of American Hospital and Koc University Hospital and comparing measurements to Mifflin-St. Jeor (MSJE) equation which is recommended for overweight and obese individuals in cases where use of indirect calorimetry is impossible. Patients' preoperative and postoperative basal metabolic rates (BMR) were measured with indirect calorimetry. 36.3% of the participants (n=12) were male patients whereas 63.6% of them (n=21) were female patients and mean age was 35.8 years. According to patients' Body Mass Index (BMI) classification, 30.3% of the participants (n=10) were identified as obese (BMI=30-39.9 kg/m²), 51.5% of them (n=17) were morbid obese (BMI=40-50kg/m²) and 18.2% of them (n=6) were super morbid obese (BMI=≥50kg/m²). T test performed showed that patients' preoperative and postoperative basal metabolic rates measured with indirect calorimeter reduced significantly at postoperative first month (p˂0.05). We found a significant correlation between Mifflin-St Jeor Formula and indirect calorimeter in terms of patients' basal metabolic rates measured separately in preoperative and postoperative periods (p˂0.05). Significant correlation was found between patients' excess body weight loss percentages and preoperative-postoperative BMR changes (p˂0.05). In light of these findings, while BMR is being measured, Mifflin-St Jeor Formula can be used if indirect calorimeter is not available and BMR decrease with laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Key Words. Sleeve Gastrectomy, BMI, Indirect Calorimeter, Mifflin-St Jeor.

Comparison of the effects of video mediated nutrition education and traditional nutrition education on nutrition knowledge level in adolescents
Inadequate and poor eating habits during adolescence may cause osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, delay in sexual development, cardiovascular diseases and some organ cancers in the later years. In order to make adolescents be able to choose healthy foods and develop appropriate nutritional behaviours regarding recommendations interventions should be organized and should be addressed with school programmes. This study aims to compare the effects of video mediated nutrition education with traditional nutrition education on nutrition knowledge level in adolescents. This study was conducted with 72 adolescents. Intervention group was consisted of 13 female students, 23 male students, while the control group consisted of 18 female students and 18 male students. Adolescent Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire(ANKQ, ABBID) scale was used to determine nutritional knowledge. Intervention group watched a video taken at supermarket while control group was educated with slidesand verbally by the researcher. Pre-test and post-tests were conducted before and after the trainings. According to the results, both of the interventionssignificantly increased the nutritional knowledge level (p <0.05). However, the difference between groups were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Organizing nutritional education activities and including courses in the curriculum and dealing with them with effective education methods enable adolescents to choose healthy foods and develop appropriate nutrition behaviors.
The effects of peer-led nutrition model on nutrition knowledge among adolescents
Nutrition in the adolescent period is important for preventing diseases especially obesity, and for proper habits for prevention of chronic diseases that may occur especially when students are able to access fast and ready food. Since the students are open for being influenced by friends in the adolescent period, it is important to carry out studies that will use this situation positively. In this study, an education model: the peer education model trying to turn this situation to an advantage. A total of 72 students were divided randomly into two separate groups as traditional and peer led education group. Traditional education included basic nutrition education and was verbally explained. The other group was selected as the peer-led method and training was provided with the peer education model by dividing into two groups; narrators and audience. Narrators were given verbal training and then were asked to explain their peers with a sample of the same training. The content of both training was exactly the same. Adölesan Beslenme Bilgi Düzeyi (ABBID) questionnaire was used for pre and post knowledge levels. Increase in knowledge in both methods were found statistically significant (p<0.05). The increase in the peer-led method was more significant than the traditional education method group, but there was not a statistically significant difference between the narrator and the audience (p>0.05). This education found to be a useful way for adolescents to increase their nutritional knowledge levels, as well as to increase their friendship and self-confidence with their peers.
