Pronunciation teaching is one of the most important components of German as a Foreign Language (GFL) instruction. However, it has been observed that pronunciation teaching is often not given sufficient importance in the process of teaching German as a foreign language. This doctoral thesis, titled "Teaching German Phonetics to Learners with L1 Turkish", is written to contribute to the elimination of this deficiency in Türkiye. After the introduction part of the study, the reasons for choosing the research topic are addressed, the term phonetic used in the study is explained, and current studies examining pronunciation teaching in GFL instruction are presented. Subsequently, the place and importance of pronunciation teaching in various foreign language teaching methods are discussed; moreover, how pronunciation teaching is handled in different teaching materials is presented with examples. In the next step, the sound systems of German and Turkish are examined comparatively. Following this comparison, the empirical part of the study is presented. In this part, the effectiveness of the pronunciation teaching units developed within the scope of the study is tested through an experiment with the participation of students whose mother tongue is Turkish. In this context, the preliminary study, which serves as preparation for the experiment, is also discussed. The content of the pronunciation teaching units consists of pronunciation features of German that may cause problems for students whose mother tongue is Turkish, and pronunciation learning strategies. Following the analysis of the experiment results, suggestions are submitted on how the study could be continued in the future. In addition, a digital pronunciation training program designed to improve the study further and tested by subjects is introduced. The study is completed with a results section containing a general summary and conclusions for future research activities.

Benefits of film adaptations of literary works for English language learning
Despite the potential to develop speaking skills, the development of strategies to benefit from films has been neglected and very few studies have been conducted. One of these strategies has been to compare film scripts and their translations, to identify chunks, technical terms and creative language examples and to list them with their translations, and to do creative dialogue writing activities especially by modeling these scripts where chunks are used extensively. Believing in the importance of evaluating the film scripts with their translations, this study aims to investigate the processes the researcher/teacher‟s high school students went through in learning and using the target language starting with the use of the film adaptations of the literary works, writing their scripts modeling the film scripts, acting their own scripts and shooting their performances. The mixed method research design was used with the triangulation of the qualitative and quantitative data. As the participants, the 68 high school students‟s views were investigated with Likert scale (1-5) questionnaire and their comments about the question items. This study improved the learners‟ productive language skills in general and their knowledge of chunks, jargons and creative language use in particular. This study was also beneficial for translation skills. This study has also improved the creativity, self-confidence and collaboration. The study also demonstrated that productive use of films in teaching English develops imagination and creativity, the literacies regarding information, media, and innovative technology and leadership through the learning and use of English. Key Words: English language movies/series, learning English, scripts, translation, technology.

Öğrencilerin bilgilerin düzenlenmesinde ve kaynaklara ulaşma konusunda sorunlar yaşadıkları ve problemleri yakın çevrelerinden yardım alarak ve farklı kaynakları araştırarak çözdükleri görülmüştür.
Investigation of the relationship between pre-service EFL teachers' TPACK and teaching motivation
This study aimed to reveal the relationship between technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) and teaching motivation of fourth year students studying in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programs in Türkiye in order to reveal whether and how the two phenomena are related to each other. The study also aimed to explore the perceptions of pre-service EFL teachers and academics regarding the TPACK and teaching motivation of pre-service EFL teachers. The participants in the study consisted of 4th year students in the EFL programs of sixteen state universities in seven geographical regions of Türkiye and academics working in these departments. Participants were determined through the stratified sampling method. 377 fourth-year EFL students and 9 academics took part in the study. The study followed a mixed-method research design. The findings of the study indicated that pre-service EFL teachers' TPACK and motivation to teach had a positive correlation. While they had minimal predictive power over each other, the impact of motivation to teach over TPACK was statistically higher than the impact of TPACK over motivation to teach. The perceptions of pre-service teachers and academics also indicated a relation between TPACK and motivation to teach. The study revealed the TPACK and teaching motivation levels of pre-service teachers as well as the perceptions of pre-service teachers and academics on these. The study also provided pedagogical implications on the development of EFL teacher education programs as well as the TPACK and teaching motivation of pre-service EFL teachers.
A longitudinal conversation analytic study on learning a lexical item in an EFL classroom at a secondary school
Classroom interaction is vital in language teaching discourse where social interaction is constructed by not only the teacher but also students. Previous research has shown a reflexive relation between language classroom interaction and creating learning opportunities. Earlier studies on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom interaction have not dealt with secondary school EFL classrooms in detail although they constitute a great deal of compulsory education in Türkiye. This study aims to portray the interaction unfolding in a secondary school English Language Teaching context by bringing empirical evidence to displays of socially distributed cognition. A longitudinal multimodal conversation analytic study is conducted to identify and detail a specific student's process of learning the lexical item 'soğukkanlı (cold-blooded)' by focusing on the interactional resources and practices deployed by the participants. The study traces how a lexical item is added into a learner's interactional repertoire progressively in terms of content-related (i.e., biology) and metaphorical meaning, how a learner shows orientation to her/his own learning process, how language teachers provide both the meaning and definition of a polysemous word and how a language teacher deals with content knowledge both in L1 and L2 in an emergent Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) environment. The findings contribute to a better understanding of secondary school EFL classroom interaction in general and of L2 learning process emerging in and through classroom interaction with an orientation to CLIL environment in particular offering implications holding the potential to improve the awareness of pre-and in-service teachers. Keywords: secondary school, EFL classroom, learning a lexical item, conversation analysis, classroom interaction

Directed motivational currents and individual differences: A mixed-method investigation in the Turkish EFL context
This study aimed at investigating the role of individual difference (ID) factors, namely self-regulatory strategy use, language learning effort, ideal L2 self, and imaginary capacity/vision in the long-term sustainment of Directed Motivational Currents (DMC). To do so, a longitudinal mixed-method sequential explanatory research design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 305 tertiary-level EFL learners via a composite survey instrument and the structural interactions between the variables were analyzed via path analysis. Results displayed that self-regulatory strategy use and language learning effort directly and strongly predicted DMC. While the ideal L2 self exerted an indirect effect on DMC, vision exerted both direct and indirect effects. Qualitative data were collected through language learning diaries and first and follow-up interviews from 9 participants chosen via retrodictive qualitative modeling, and then analyzed utilizing content analysis. Findings supported the impact of self-regulatory strategy use and L2 learning effort in DMC. Volitional use of self-regulation by pure DMC cases was displayed. While the DMC group preferred meta-affective and meta-cognitive strategies to regulate the emotional and mental challenges of the current, cognitive strategies were the most favored ones in the DMC-like, No-DMC and starting in DMC-like, and ending in no-DMC groups. Language learning effort in the groups was mainly in line with their motivational and affective states. On account of these results, this study brings new insights into the individual level variability of the DMC construct and offers several pedagogical implications to ensure sustaining the intense motivational current for optimum benefit in the SLA context.
Video-mediated lesson planning conversations of pre-service language teachers in a transnational virtual exchange project
The virtual exchange (VE) projects in language teacher education programs have become widely utilized sets of activities due to their potential affordances for teachers to develop a variety of skills and competences in technology-mediated settings. To this end, this study explores how pre-service language teachers (PSTs) make use of a VE project and VE-based teacher education activities in a trilateral exchange environment. The participants were pre-service language teachers based in Türkiye, Germany and Sweden in the VE project. All the activities were completed online and the ultimate goal for the PSTs was to create a shared lesson plan collaboratively in their teams. The data included the screen-recordings of the PSTs' video-mediated interactions, written outputs and the collaborative products that they created during the course of the project. The study used multimodal conversation analysis as the research methodology and treated every piece of the data in terms of an emic and participant-relevant perspective. The line-by-line analyses of participants' video-mediated interactions showed that the PSTs use what they have experienced during the VE project as a resource to shape their own lesson plans in-and-through their lesson planning conversations. They do so by deploying retrospective or immediate orientation to their shared experiential practices while supporting or proposing lesson plan idea, which results in a collaborative pedagogical decision about their shared product in-situ. The study demonstrates that the PSTs potentially transform the VE project into an experiential learning setting promoting their professional development, thus bringing new insights into language teacher education and virtual exchange.
From arguables to learnables: Resolving disagreements and creating learning opportunities in L2 methodology classroom interaction in a teacher education context
Pre-service teachers (PSTs) engage in various intellectual and social practices such as learning to teach, negotiating beliefs and developing identities, studying a subject matter, and becoming a part of the community of teachers. Within this process, PSTs interaction with their peers and teacher trainers in teacher education classes may play a role in negotiating and shaping their pedagogical and their professional beliefs around arguable matters. However, there are only a handful of studies that investigate L2 teacher education classroom interaction in general and language teaching methodology classes in particular, which aim at building PSTs' pedagogical knowledge. Considering the body of literature suggesting the importance of classroom interaction for learning and teaching, this study aims to explore the interactional resources an L2 teacher educator uses during arguable episodes in a "Teaching English Language Skills" course. Using multimodal conversation analysis for the examinations of 19.5 hours of video recordings, the study details four main interactional resources used by the teacher educator during arguable sequences: reformulations, agreement-prefaced disagreements, understanding checks, and invoking sources of expert knowledge. The findings show how these resources create an opportunity for teacher learning by promoting learnables. The study has implications for pre-service language teacher education and L2 classroom interaction. Keywords: classroom interaction, conversation analysis, L2 methodology courses, arguables, learnables
Enhancing peer collaborative oral interaction through interactional strategy training
This study aims to examine the effectiveness of interactional strategy training on the level of collaboration between pairs during peer interaction. The research sample consisted of 28 students, aged 18-22, who were divided into two groups: the experimental group, which received instruction in interactional strategies, and the control group, which engaged in the same pair-tasks as the experimental group but without strategy training. Employing a mixed-methods research design, quantitative and qualitative data were collected through pre-task, immediate post-task, and delayed post-task speaking activities, self-evaluation forms, and interviews. The interactions during pre-, post-, and delayed post-tasks were analyzed to identify the interactional strategies and patterns formed by the dyads. The self-evaluation forms and interviews provided additional insights into the participants' reflections and perceptions of the interactional strategy training. The analysis of dyadic interaction revealed that both groups showed increased collaboration and utilization of interactional strategies in the post-task. However, the experimental group exhibited a significantly higher level of collaboration and implementation of strategies during interactions. The examination of interaction patterns and strategy use demonstrated the positive impact of interactional strategy training in enhancing collaboration and promoting the use of interactional strategies. Furthermore, the analysis of self-evaluation forms and interviews revealed that participants in the strategy group experienced various benefits, including heightened awareness of their interactional behaviors, improvements in speech fluency, interactional skills, strategy usage, and affective factors such as motivation, self-confidence, and anxiety levels.
The interactional management of lack of student participation in video-mediated EFL classroom interactions: Response pursuit practices
As active student participation in classroom interaction is a central component of foreign language learning, eliciting student participation becomes consequential in L2 classrooms. Teacher-fronted classroom interaction mainly shapes around Initiation-Response- Evaluation (McHoul, 1978; Mehan, 1979) sequences in which teachers initiate interaction with questions followed by student response and teacher evaluation in the third turn. When teacher questions are left unanswered, teachers resort to diverse response pursuit practices to ensure interactional and pedagogical progressivity. Previous research has documented various interactional practices that teachers employ to pursue response in diverse face-to-face educational settings. However, in recent years, online classrooms have been getting increasingly widespread, and the dearth of research informing such settings have become more apparent than ever. Although some studies have pointed out the challenges including low student participation in online classroom activities, teachers' actual practices in situ remains largely unexplored. Addressing this research gap, this study deals with the lack of response to teacher questions in a video-mediated L2 classroom in a higher education context. Using multimodal conversation analysis for the examination of screen- recordings of EFL classroom interactions, this study documents the response pursuit practices that an EFL teacher deploys to mobilize student response. The findings of the study show that utilizing diverse verbal and screen-based actions, the teacher restores intersubjectivity, elicits student response, hence ensures the interactional and pedagogical progressivity. Uncovering how these practices maximize interactional space, this study contributes to the understanding of the interactional organization of response pursuit practices and brings new insights to video-mediated L2 classroom discourse.
Language assessment literacy level and needs of in-service EFL teachers in Turkey
The current research study aimed to examine the LAL levels and training needs of in-service EFL teachers who work in different formal and non-formal education institutions. To that end, training in LTA in undergraduate ELT programs and certain areas they perceive a need for training were investigated. Besides, it aimed to investigate whether training needs in LTA of them differ based on the type of institution and grade level they teach at, their level of experience and education. Their experience concerning LTA practices in classroom was also explored. The study employed a sequential explanatory mixed method design. Both quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (interview) data were collected from EFL teachers from different education settings in Turkey. Quantitative data collected from 300 in-service EFL teachers was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Subsequently, qualitative data collected from 20 in-service EFL teachers to triangulate and clarify questionnaire findings was analyzed utilizing coding and categorizing procedures. The results indicated that the training that they received in four domains of LTA was not adequate and the need for intermediate level of further training was expressed. The findings of the qualitative data also demonstrated that LTA training is not evaluated as sufficient by most of them and the course in LTA did not address the fundamental concepts of LTA adequately. Furthermore, they view the acquisition of expertise in LTA as essential for improving the overall quality of education. Considering these findings and the importance of LAL for EFL teachers, implications and suggestions were provided.
EFL instructors' digital technology perceptions, motivation, and job satisfaction levels in emergency remote education
The present study investigated EFL instructors' digital technology integration, motivation, perception and job satisfaction levels regarding SAMR Model in the Emergency Remote Education (ERE) process caused from Covid-19 pandemic. The study was employed at 20 universities in Türkiye, and 162 female and 81 male EFL instructors participated in the quantitative study, and 14 of them participated in the qualitative part via convenience sampling method. A mixed-method explanatory research design was employed. Quantitative data was collected via online questionnaires, and qualitative data was collected via semi-structured interviews, reflection journals, and open-ended resposes. Descriptive Statistics, Pearson Correlation Analysis, Hierarchical Multiple Regression, Anova, and Content analysis methods were utilised. The results discovered that EFL instructors' digital technology integration levels circulated around the Substitution and Modification levels, and instructors were neither motivated nor satisfied with teaching online during the ERE. It was revealed that there was not a significant relationship between instructors' digital technology integration levels and their motivation and job satisfaction levels. Multiple Hierarchical Regression results showed that instructors' gender, background education, and online teaching experiences have a siginificant relationship with their digital technology integration levels, age and seniority do not have. The findings pointed that instructors' digital technology integration practices were rendered mainly because of passive students and insufficient infrastructure. To ensure a sustainable education, educational bodies are recommended to strengthen infrastructure, and develop regular Professional Development Units to meet the addressed gap of the instructors' insufficient background education and online teaching experiences with the upgraded methods.
Emergency remote teaching: EFL instructors' technological pedagogical content knowledge and satisfaction with teaching online
The present study aimed at investigating Turkish EFL instructors' perceived level of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and satisfaction with teaching online in an emergency remote teaching context. A total of 205 instructors of English working at universities located in Turkey participated in the study. A mixed-method approach was used for data collection in which both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. Quantitative data were collected through the Online Faculty Satisfaction Survey (OFSS) and the TPACK-EFL scale. Qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with the instructors who were determined based on voluntariness. The findings showed that the general TPACK of the participants in this study was relatively high and they evaluated their CK as the highest and their TPACK as the lowest. It was also revealed that the mean scores related to non-technological knowledge domains of TPACK were significantly higher than the mean scores related to technological domains. Instructors who participated in this study were not very satisfied with teaching online in general, which stemmed mainly from student-related factors such as low motivation, participation, and attendance levels of students in online courses, lack of face-to-face contact and interaction with students, lack of technological equipment and internet connection problems. And lastly, it was found that instructors' level of TPACK could predict their satisfaction with teaching online. The findings of the present study have several important implications for language educators' TPACK, its implementation in both online and face-to-face education, and the improvement of online education practices in Turkey.
Oral corrective feedback & repair techniques in dyadic online EFL young learner speaking lessons
Corrective feedback has been at the centre of many SLA studies due to the desire to reveal its impact in creating opportunities for learning. Many of those studies have been mostly delimited to the experimental settings to compare different types of oral corrective feedback, primarily their effectiveness for learning grammatical structures. However, very few studies examined video-mediated or natural interactions to understand oral trajectories of feedback and its impact on young learners. With this in mind, this study explored what kinds of oral corrective feedback practitioners enacted on meaning and form in an informal video-mediated young learners EFL interaction setting and how/if these actions led to learner repairs. Aligning with this purpose, this study, in the first place, analysed the frequencies of corrective feedback through coding based on Lyster & Ranta's (1997) model and repairs with respect to error distribution (syntactic, morphological, phonological, semantic). In the follow-up analysis, the researcher traced the details of correction sequences longitudinally across ten different one-to-one sessions of learners through discourse analysis. Nearly 20 hours of data coming from EFL-speaking lessons of 10 young learners inform us that teachers' preferences in online settings mainly rely on recasts with relatively fewer use of elicitations followed by explicit feedback and other CF moves. However, elicitation and sporadically used double corrective moves proportionally led to more repairs of learners than the most preferred CF, recasts. Nonetheless, some errors repaired by learners were repeated in future sessions, unveiling that the impact of correction and repair may not be long-lasting.
The main purpose of this study titled "What is the place of phraseological units in the learning of French as a Foreign Language for Turkish-speaking learners?" is to analyze the field of phraseology. Thus, within the scope of our study, it was essential not only to consider linguistics, semantics, and pragmatics but also to add the learning dimension called "phraseodidactics". At the core of our reflection, we put three out of the four phraseological units called pragmatems, collocations, and locutions. First, we studied the different definitions given by different specialists in the phraseological field. Secondly, with the aim of having an improvement effect on teachers regarding the perception of concepts by Turkish-speaking learners, we interpreted the phraseological units. Thirdly, we undertook a comparative study of three different textbooks for teaching French as a Foreign Language (FLE) at the B1 and B2 levels: among which we have Saison, Tendances and Cosmopolite. Simultaneously, we analyzed two videos from the TV5monde platform to determine the place of the phraseological units within these different approaches.
English language student teacher anxiety in online and face-to-face practicum
Language learning is an indispensable part of the current educational system. Researchers and educators are striving to discover the most effective methods of teaching and acquiring additional languages. In addition to studies on second language acquisition (SLA), extensive research has been conducted on various factors influencing this process, including affective factors such as anxiety. Numerous studies have explored anxiety in relation to foreign language learning, teacher and teaching anxiety, and the impact of anxiety on the teaching and learning processes. However, insufficient attention has been given to investigating EFL student teacher anxiety, necessitating further research in this area. Therefore, the present study aims to uncover EFL student teacher anxiety during their teaching practice and examine the changes in anxiety levels experienced by pre-service English teachers over time. A mixed-methods approach employing a sequential explanatory design model was adopted for this study. A total of 182 EFL student teachers participated, providing quantitative data through a 5-point Likert scale called the Foreign Language Student Teacher Anxiety (FLSTA) scale. Additionally, 14 participants were involved in qualitative data collection, which included interviews and reflective journals. The collected data were analyzed statistically to obtain descriptive and explanatory results. The findings revealed that participants in each group (junior and senior students in online practicum, and senior students in face-to-face practicum) exhibited a moderate level of anxiety. Furthermore, the sources of anxiety and the solutions to alleviate anxiety levels varied across different educational settings.
