Evaluation of architectural and planning practices in Bursa between 1950 and 1990 through the news on local press

One of the most important sources conveying information about the architectural and planning practices of that period, urban space formation and architectural discourse in cities shaped by the political understanding, economy and technological infrastructure of a certain period is the printed press. Political decisions taken throughout the country, laws and regulations adopted based on these decisions reveal different local processes in cities with different dynamics. One of the important sources of information regarding the development activities differentiating locally is the local printed press. At the same time, local press news shed light on the architectural discourse of the period. In this study, local press news has been determined as the main source of architectural thought. The aim of the study is to analyze the architecture and planning activities in Bursa city center and urban space formation through local printed press. The study area is limited to Bursa city center. Considering the change in the political environment in the country, the thresholds in the history of urbanization, planning and architectural activities, and the development of journalism over the years, the period between 1950 and 1990 was determined as the period to be examined. The news of Hakimiyet newspaper published in this period is the main source of the study.The reason for choosing Hakimiyet newspaper was that it accompanied the period under study without interruption, had a high daily circulation at that time and could access all of the newspaper prints. Within the scope of the study, news was reviewed and the news related to architecture and planning, as well as all kinds of production and demolition activities taking place in the city center, the decisions taken regarding urbanization, columns and comics related to the subject were selected to be examined. The selected news are classified under the main categories of planning, practice and protection using content analysis method. The period between 1950-1990 has been studied in periods of ten years. As a result of the study, it was determined which architectural and planning activities were on the agenda of the local press, and urban spaces such as the most reported buildings, streets and residential areas were determined.
