Melancholic tendencies in western painting after 1950

In this textual study, the concept of melancholy, the definition of melancholy and its place in the history of art from past to present are examined through specific examples. Starting from Albrecht Dürer's famous engraving "Melencolia I" in 1500, the symbolic expressions of the concept of melancholy and its successors such as Arnold Böcklin, Munch, Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Caspar David Friedrich, Anselm Kiefer in the context of art history, the melancholy-themed works of artists who lived hundreds of years before each other and who were the most prominent names of the periods they lived in, showing similarities in some points such as composition, color, light, etc. will be tried to be examined. It is known that the approach to the phenomenon of melancholy is different in Western and Eastern societies. The main purpose of the study is to analyze the course of the melancholy phenomenon on the artists in the context of western art and the melancholic atmosphere that is involuntarily intuited in my own artistic practice by establishing a connection with historical examples from past to present and concluded with a brief analysis of my works.
