Discussions and formation dynamics of sociology in Turkey between 1980–2000

The history of Sociology in Turkey goes back to more than a century. This Turkish sociological process has intertwined with politics. Accordingly, it has particular periods that have been dependent on political relations. The era of post-1980 is one of them. This study discusses varying themes of sociological studies in Turkey in the context of transformations in politics, economy and society and changes in social sciences. It is aimed to deal with the major themes within the scope of drivers of change around Turkey and the world. The study looks into the sociological works and their focusing issues between 1980-2000 years. This era embraces 1980 coup d'état, liberalization processes, integration to the global and alternation discourses, political instability of 1990s and February 28 post-modern coup in Turkey. Meanwhile, there are other drivers of this process that globalization, post-modernism, disorganization of nation-states, subversion of Soviet Union and changes in social sciences in European and American countries. In these factors are often studied that urbanization, gecekondu, women's studies, family, religion, civil society, politic, nationalism, ethnicity and identity between 1980 and 2000. Thus, on the eve of the transformation of world history into a new millennium, the agendas, topics and discussion areas of sociology in Turkey will be crystallized and revealed.
