Education of gifted children of 7-12 years age and a method suggestion (A case study of İstanbul)

The study is carried out with the intention of building up a method suggestion oriented towards the education of gifted children of 7-12 years age group.Population and sampling of the study is made up of the teachers taking part in the training of gifted children at 2 public and 2 private educational institutions located in Fatih, Gaziosmanpaşa, Kadıkoy and Çamlıca towns of Istanbul in 2008-2009 academic year.The survey prepared by the researcher for collecting data is made up of 23 articles, and further 10 articles, relating to independent variables (gender, age, marital status, graduated school, professional seniority, branch, current school, previous school, duration of employment in the training of gifted children, special trainings received) are also included in the survey. During the analysis of the data obtained from the survey; calculations of frequency (f), percentile (%), arithmetic mean ( ) were carried out, and t-test and one-way analysis of variance were utilized to determine whether there were any meaningful differences between the groups.The following results were obtained from this study;At the end of the analysis, the opinions relating to the special training methods, which are most frequently attended by the teachers participating in the survey, indicated that the gifted children of 7-12 years age group should be trained in accordance with the individual strengths of the students; guidance and counseling services should be provided as free; the training should be given outside the classroom in an environment appropriate for the implementation; training should be provided with enriched educational programs, and the training program should be differentiated in accordance with the development characteristics of the students.The questions were grouped in accordance with special education models of Grouping, Acceleration and Enrichment to find out the interrelationship between the dependent and independent variables. 3 differentiations were found in terms of grouped dependent and independent variables. It is determined that there is a meaningful differentiation at p<0,05 significance level among the opinions of the teachers, i.e. firstly, their opinion relating to the grouping method in accordance with the teachers? marital status, secondly their opinion relating to the grouping method in accordance with their currently employed educational institution and the enrichment method, and thirdly their opinion relating to the grouping in accordance with the duration of employment in the training of the gifted children.Key words : Gifted Children, Special Education, Grouping Model, Enrichment Model, Acceleration Model.
