Abstract (EN)

This study aims to analyze the ideas of Abd al-Latīf al-Karamānī on the family and home life in the sixteenth century. Karamānī's Ādāb-i Manāzil differs from the books written before in this genre in terms of being written in the context of conversation (sohbet). Writers of the ethics as Ibn al-Miskawayh, Îcî, al-Tūsī, al-Gulshanī, Amâsî and Kinalizāde dealt with the topic of "manzil" as a chapter of their books, but this topic is centered in all chapters of Karamānī's book. In this work we try to analyze the ideas of al-Karamānī on the manzil and to describe that term. It al-Karamānī excemines the behaviour patterns of individuals who share the home life, for example duties of women in the family and men at the center of the family institution. He focuses on the term manzil, because he prefers to analyze his society by describing its social and cultural characteristics and by positioning the family members in daily life. It is known that women did not receive education in any madrasa or school at that time. Its far as we can see in 1570's women could learn only from another woman whose conversational gathering (sohbet) they could attend, the wife of al- Karamānī in this case. Having being the daughter of a scholar (ālim), Karamānī's wife could teach other women who visited her at home in the fields of tafsir and hadis. According to Ādāb-i Manāzil the most excellent group among women is the righteous (sāliha) women. Women actively participate in trade by engaging in weaving and spinning. In this study we also try to analyze how these efforts contributed to manzil life, and what it meant fort he larger society participated.
