Emergency patients with abdominal pain in neutrophils/lymphocyte ratio, platelet/lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width (PDW) of acute appendicitis place in diagnosis

One of the frequent referrals to the emergency department is acute onset abdominal pain. Acute appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition that develops anywhere in the appendix or completely, and constitutes 10% of patients with abdominal pain and emergency services. Acute appendicitis is the most frequent surgical operation requiring with abdominal pain and emergency services. In the diagnosis of acute appendicitis, the history of the patient, physical examination findings and initial symptoms are important; but there is a need for adjunct diagnostic tools and different scoring systems to make a definite diagnosis, reduce the rate of negative appendectomy by 15-30%. We aimed to investigate the location of NLR, PLR, PDW, RDW and MPV values and scoring systems in acute appendicitis in our study. Between January 2013 and June 2015, 455 patients who applied to the Emergency Department of the Dicle University Medical Faculty and who were suspected to have acute appendicitis and who were diagnosed as acute appendicitis as a result of the pathology report and 114 patients in the control group were retrospectively evaluated. The results were given as mean +SD. Univariate statistical analyzes were performed using chi-square test for categorical variables and student-t test for continuous variables. Kruskal Wallis one way analysis of variance and Mann-Whitney U test were used as the multiple comparison method since the groups were not in normal distribution and the number of subjects in the groups was not equal. The values of NLR, PLR and PDW after the study were significant in terms of acute appendicitis; We think that MPV and RDW values should be further studied in terms of ancillary appendicitis.
