Abstract (EN)

This research was performed as experimentally to determine the effectiveness of patient safety education for open heart surgery patients on their quality of life. The research included 80 patients (40 control, 40 experimental) who applied for open heart surgery to Tekirdag Namık Kemal University Heart Surgery Unit and meet the criteria to be included in the sample. The patients in the control group received routine nursing care in the ward while the patients in the experimental group were given planned training for their safety at home after discharge. Patient Identification Form, Knowledge Level Determination Form, SF 36 Quality of Life Scale was used to collect data. Data analysed with descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk, Student t, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, Pearson Ki-Kare, Fisher-Freeman-Halton, Fisher's Exact tests and Spearman correlation analysis. The changes after safety education for the knowledge levels about wound care, nutrition, elimination, protection of thorax, walking/exercises, social activities, sex life and drug use in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group (p <0.05, p <0.01). Difference between role limitations due to physical health and general health scores after safety education were statistically significant (p<0.05).As a conclusion, it was determined that the planned patient safety education for open heart surgery patients was effective on the knowledge level and quality of life of the patients. urulacaktır
