Effects of livestock manure obtained from cattle breeding enterprises on shallow ground water in Adana province

Animal waste includes, manure from livestock farms, bedding and litter, plus such things as waste water, feedlot runoff, silage juice from trench silos. Waste from livestock building, when not stored properly, causes environmental problems including odors and appearance of pollution. This negative effect caused by animal manure from livestock building can be prevented. With this purpose, consideration of necessary legal and technical standards for farm manure storage structure at the phase of planning and project can eliminate these problems. In this study, chosen livestock farms as suitable to research purpose were investigated in Adana province. Problems caused by waste from livestock building were determined and necessary explanations were made about utilization of waste.In the study, the effects of livestock manure obtained from cattle breeding enterprises on the shallow ground water have been investigated. Shallow ground water samples, soil samples and drinking water samples which were taken around and in the enterprises have been analysed, 4 times a year, during the year 2010. Nitrate and ammonium on shallow ground water and soil samples, E. coli, fecal coliform and total coliform on shallow ground water and drinking water samples analysis results have been used to investigate the existance of pollution originating from animal manure. Waste from cattle breeding enterprises has been accumulation on soil surface causing nitrate and ammonium levels have been increased in water and soil contents. Especially after rainy days, these levels have been increased much more than normal. At the end of the study, using the study area as a model, it was concluded that uncontrolled cattle breeding enterprises may irreversibly damage to the environment and natural sources in near feature.
