The relationship between trunk muscle function and fatigue level, quality of life in adolescents i̇diopathic scoliosis

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between trunk muscle functions and fatigue level, quality of life in patients with adolescents idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The study included 72 individuals with AIS ranging in age from 10 to 18 years (mean age: 13.83±1.82 years). Participants' sosciodempgraphic information were recorded. Trunk endurance of individuals was evaluated with McGill's Trunk Muscles Endurance Tests. Trunk power was evaluated with the Sit-ups test and modified Push-ups test. Deep trunk stabilizer muscles were evaluated with Pressure Biofeedback Unit (PBU). The quality of life was assessed by the Scoliosis Research Society-22 Quality of Life Questionnaire (SRS-22) and the fatigue level by the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). The right lateral bridge test (r:-0.283, p<0.05) in trunk endurance assessments and modified Push-ups test (r:-0.268, p<0.05) in trunk power assessments were negatively correlated with fatigue severity in patients with AIS. In the AIS, no relationship was found between the other trunk muscle endurance and power tests, deep trunk muscle strength and the fatigue severity (p>0.05). Cobb angle were asked that the quality of life has been negative in patients with AİS. In addition, right lateral bridge test (r:-0.393, p<0.05) and left lateral bridge test (r:-0.350, p<0.05) in trunk endurance assessments were positively related to the quality of life. In the AIS, no relationship was found between the other trunk muscle endurance and power tests, deep trunk muscle strength and the quality of life (p>0.05). The results of this study showed that fatigue level increased and quality of life was adversely affected in AIS patients whose trunk muscle functions was lower. In individuals with AIS, it is expected that decreasing in the fatigue level and increasing in the quality of life by increasing the functions of the trunk muscles.
