Abstract (EN)
It has been proven that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease accompanies lung cancer in most patients. However, distinctive assessments prior to resection in this situation are insufficient. Our study was designed by suggesting that the BODE index, which is an accepted prognostic factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the major risk factor of lung resections, can predict the parameters related to postoperative complications and duration of hospital stay. The study includes 33 lung resection patients (Three females). The patients underwent spirometer, the stair climbing test and BODE index was calculated. The maximal oxygen uptake, calculated by using the standardized formula for the stair climbing test. Patients were divided into four groups according to BODE index: zero (Group 0, n=9), one (Group 1, n=14), two (Group 2, n=6) and three or four (Group 3, n=4). There weren?t any significant differences between the groups according to demographics, clinical features, exercise capacity or performed operations (p>0.05). The BODE index was found to have a significant relationship with spirometer values (r=-0.36/-0.58, p<0.05). Also, a significant correlation was found between the BODE index and secretion retention, respiratory failure and additional complications (unrelated with lungs) (r=0.49/0.50, p=0.00). The BODE index was found to be significantly correlated with duration of postoperative extubation, stay in intensive care unit, hospital stay and additional oxygen support (r=0.34/0.40, p=0.02/0.05). The maximal oxygen uptake was not related with any of these parameters (p>0.05). We recommend that the BODE index should be evaluated as other parameters before lung resection in patients with airway obstruction.
