Abstract (EN)

Uncertainty is a common denominator of art, philosophy and other branches of science. Although it is mostly remembered in a negative sense, it functions as a force that triggers creativity in the process of human creation. The motivation underlying the human effort to make sense of nature stems from the instinct to eliminate the uncertainties it perceives. The sense of curiosity aroused by the state of uncertainty appears as a trigger for creativity in every discovery and invention, from the discovery of fire to the effort to destroy the unknowns of space. Instead of abstract and indeterminate relations of objects in nature, such as scarcity-multiplicity, proximity-distance, human thought has tried to achieve certainty, that is, to impose measurement systems on the world expressed in quantities and numbers, and to put the whole world into a network of measurements called "dimensions". He did this behavior, which can be considered the foundations of mathematics and geometry, by using his own body and limbs, the most familiar thing for him at that moment, as tools. In Ancient Greece, indeterminacy was at the heart of the Presocratic thinkers' efforts to explain the building block (arkhe) of the universe, its fundamental principles and the events that occur. Especially with the emergence of the philosophy of indeterminism in the 20th century, the presence of uncertainty in art has gained a place with other related concepts such as chance, coincidence and unpredictability. In the same period, new theories of perception put forward in the field of psychology have made the concept of "perceptual uncertainty" an element that can be addressed by both the artist and the viewer in art. In this context, this thesis study titled "Analysis of Perceptual Uncertainty Through Ceramic Artifacts" has been prepared in response to the questions of how perceptual uncertainties take place in art and how they can be evaluated with ceramic materials. Keywords: Uncertainty, Perception, Chance, Coincidence, Indeterminism
