Abstract (EN)

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a complex illness that cause complications in kidney, eye, periheral nerves and micro-macrovascular systems and being cronic hyperglysemia. Because of complications and treatment process, it emerges in terms of both person and society as major health problem. AİM: The aim of this study, it evaluates the relationship between glysemic control and RDW and in addition to discuss avalibility of as a marker the risk of microvascular complications in diabetic patients. Microvascular complications are the cause of significant morbidity and the mortality, for this reason, if the end of study detects the relationship between high RDW it may be used as an indicator of early diagnosis of complications. It will be provided early diagnosis and taken precaution in microvascular complications. In this case, we believe that will contribute to improving the quality of life and the survival time of patients. MATERİALS AND METHODS: 200 patients with the diagnosis of diabetes was carried out retrospective file scanning. The file of patients who have not anemia and have diagnosed with diabetes was searched. RDW, Hgb, creatin, microvascular complications (rethinopathy, nefropathy, neuropathy were assessed by optometry, 24-hour urine and EMG) collected. Patients diagnosed with diabetes, for regulation were divided into 2 groups according to their level of HbA1c (HbA1c≤7, HbA1c>7). FINDINGS: RDW average of the diabetic group (16.1 . ± 2.07 ) was above the normal. Patients with diabetic retinopathy and those without was no significant difference between the mean of RDW (16,40±2,13 vs 15,93±2,01; p>0.05). Patients with diabetic nefropathy and neuropathy and those without was was a significant relationship respectively with the mean of RDW (17,30±1,54 vs 15,08±1,92; p< 0.05)(17,26±1,144 vs 14,97±1,98 ; p< 0.05). RESULTS: Higher RDW values are associated with increased odds of nefropathy and neuropathy(p<0,005).
