Abstract (EN)

INTRODUCTION: DiabetesMellitus (DM) is a complex disease charecterized by chronic hyperglicemia which causes complications on microvascular and macrovascular systems at kidney, retina and peripheral nerves. DM is a big health problem because of complications and therapy for patients and public. AIM/HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to investigate whether there is association between RDW and HbA1c which indicates glycemic control. Additional aim is to discuss RDW as a marker of DM complications. Especially microvascular complications are important at morbidity and mortality in DM patients. Wehypo the sethatif the study shows association between RDW andcomplications, RDW can be used for early diagnose of complications. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study included 310 diabetic patients and 328 healthy control. All patients were investigated for anemia, RDW, HbA1c, creatin, macrovascular and microvascula rcomplications (retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy which are investigated by retina examination, 24-h urine/spot urine and electroneuromyography (EMG) in order. RESULTS: RDW value results was significantly higher (13.92+_ 1.22) in diabetic group than control group(12.77+_1.54) (p<0.001). There was strong correlation between RDW and microalbumin in 24-h urine (0.291, p<0.001). % 13.47 RDW value is predicting nephropathy in diabetic patients with % 73 sensivitivity and % 61 specifitiy (AUC=0.689, p<0.001*). CONCLUSION: There was association between RDW and HbA1c. Only nephropathy was associated with RDW in all microvascular complications investigated. KEY WORDS: RDW, diabetes, HbA1c, microvascular complications, retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy.
