Depression and anxiety evaluation in parents of children undergoing angiography

Abstract (EN)

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the depression and anxiety levels of parents whose children undergoing angiography because of their congenital heart disease. Material and Method: Between January - May 2014, the parents of 73 children with congenital heart disease presenting to The Pediatric Cardiology Department in Gaziantep University were included. Beck Depression and Beck Anxiety Inventory was used to evaluate the parents one day before angiography. Findings: 73 patients who had undertaken angiography were included in this study. 31 (42.5%) were female, 42 (57.5%) were male. 61 (83.6%) of the patients had acyanotic congenital heart disease, 12 (16.4%) had cyanotic congenital heart disease. 25 (57.5%) of the patients had undergone diagnostic angiography, whereas 48 (42.5%) had undergone theurapatic angiography. According to Beck Depression Inventory 41 (56.2%) of the 73 mothers were normal, 8 (11.0%) had mild depression, 14 (19.2%) had moderate depression, 10 (13,7%) had severe depression. According to Beck Anxiety Inventory 36 (49.3%) of the mothers was normal, 16 (21.9%) had mild anxiety, 8 (11.0%) had moderate anxiety, 13 (17.8%) had severe anxiety. According to Beck Depression Inventory 43 (58.9%) of the 73 fathers were normal, 12 (16.4%) had mild depression, 10 (13.7%) had moderate depression, 8 (11.0%) had severe depression. According to Beck Anxiety Inventory 43 (58.9%) of the 73 fathers were normal, 12 (16.4%) had mild anxiety, 10 (13.7%) had moderate anxiety, 8 (11.0%) had severe anxiety. The depression scales were compared in between the mothers of children with cyanotic congenital heart disease and the mothers of children with acyanotic congenital heart disease (p = 0.049). The anxiety scales of the mothers whose children had cyanotic heart disease compared to the mothers whose children hafd acyanotic heart disease were alse found statistically meaningful (p = 0.043) Results: Anxiety and depression levels of the parents whose children had undergone angiıography were higher than the normal population. It was found that angiography enhanced the depression and anxiety levels in parents who had children with congenital heart disease. Also it was found that the parents who had children with cyanotic heart disease had higher anxiety and depression levels compared to parents who had children with acyanotic heart.
