Examination of the relationship between parents' attitude and the Internet addiction level

This research has been done to examine and determine the relationship between the possible internet addiction and the parents attitude considering the students' perception. In this research, parents' attitude and internet addiction considering the students' perception have been examined accourding to the students' gender, environment, school type, grade, parents' education and relationship to their mother and father, their peer group presence and physical qualities whether they show a statistical difference in meaningful level. A descriptive scanning model has been used in the research. The students, who study at vocational schools under the Ministry of Education in Sultanbeyli district in İstanbul city in 2013-14 educational year, constitute the environment of the research. In this direction, the scale has been carried through 490 students in total, who were elected with the random sampling methods out of 6570 students in this environment. To measure the students' internet addiction, BAPINT Scale, originated by Prof. Dr. Kültekin ÖĞER has been used. The scale is constituted by 18 items and 5 sublevels, measuring the frequency of the internet use, diagnose, effects on life, the intensity of the desire to use internet and the motivation of getting rid of the internet addiction. To measure the parents' attitude, The Parental Attitude Scale, originated by Kuzgun and Eldeleklioğlu (1999) has been used. The scale includes 40 items and 3 sublevels on Democratic Attitude, Protective Attitude and Authoritarian Attitude. To analyze the data. SPSS 15.0 package program has been used to examine the frequency and the percentage values of demographic characteristics, moreover the arithmetic average of scales and the standart deviation have been calculated. Independent T Group Test has been used to determine whether the scores got from the internet addiction and parents' attitude scale differ due to the gender, school type, 21 relationship to the mother and father and to the peer group; Kruskal Wallis-H Test Analysis has been used if they differ due to the environment, parents' education, Mann Whitney-U Test has been used to determine which groups differ in meaning from each other, (ANOVA) Unilateral Variance Analysis has been used to determine whether they differ due to the school type and physical qualities and Mann Whitney U Test is applied to determine whether they differ up to the relationship to the mother.The correlation between the scales' total scores, Parents' Attitude Scale and Internet Addiction Scale total scores and sublevel scores has been analysed by Pearson Moments Multiplication Analysis. According to the research results; the environment is not an effective variable on the students' internet addiction level and the parents' attitude perception. Students' Internet Addiction Level differ in their gender, grade, parents' education, relationship to mother and father; students'parents' attitude perception differ in their gender, school type, grade, father's education, relationship to mother and father, peer group presence and physical qualities. Students' Internet Addiction Level is low. Positive meaningful correlations have been established between Students' Internet Addiction Level and Parents' Attitude. Protective and authoritarian parents' attitude increases the internet addiction level. The more the level of democratic parents' attitude the less the internet addiction effects on life becomes. When the protective and authoritarian parents' attitude increases, the frequency of the internet use, the diagnose scores of the internet addiction, the effects of the internet addiction on life and the intensity of the internet usage desire increases.
