Arminianism and Its place in Christian theology

Jacob Arminius was a Protestant theologian who lived during the rise of Calvinism in the Netherlands in the 16th century. He criticized Calvinist ideas on destiny, human will, grace, redemption, and perseverance of faith. Arminius' points of appeal, collected in five articles by his followers, the Remonstrants, were rejected at the 1618 Dort Synod. But Arminianism first moved to England and then to America by immigration. Arminianism was an important breaking point in Reformed theology. Arminianism gives a share in salvation to the human will, which extreme Calvinism completely denies and claims to have no function in salvation, and tries to establish a balance theology between grace and will without falling into Pelagianism. With this feature, it became widespread in time, especially with the efforts of John Wesley and Methodists, in the face of Calvinism, which rose with the Puritans in America. Many Protestant congregations in America relied on the Arminian views of universal atonement, conditional selection, the resistibility of grace, the share of human will in salvation, and the possibility of apostasy, rather than the Calvinist views of unconditional selection, limited atonement, irresistible grace, the complete corruption of man, and the preservation of the faithful to the end. In this study, Arminianism will be examined as a theological view that follows a different path from Reformed theology. First of all, before coming to Arminius, information will be given on the discussions of destiny in Christian theology. Then, Arminius' theological views and his objections to Calvinism and the evidence he brought on this subject will be discussed. Then, it will be focused on how Arminianism spread in England and America, and then information will be given about the debates between Arminians and Calvinists from the Remonstrants to the present. Finally, conclusions and judgments about the place and importance of Arminius and Arminianism in Protestant theology will be presented.
