Abstract (EN)
Tribe is the most controversial concept of social science. Social science disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, ethnography, history have tried to explain this social group with their methodologies. From the point of Middle Eastern sociology, the concept of tribe refers to the terms such as social, economic, political, cultural and geographical components in terms of organizational form. The tribe in the social structure of the Middle East is one of the social groups that sometimes obeys, sometimes conflicts with the processes and affects the processes in the rural and urban places. After the First World War, the capitalist mode of production, like many geographies of the world, has also affected the Middle East. Capitalism, unlike Western European experience in the Middle East, has created a form of articulation instead of solving pre-capitalist social structures and relations. Closely related to the way of urbanization in the Middle East, like religious sects and ethnic groups, the tribes have been able to maintain its social structures relations and networks as articulation on urban areas. Tribes, in Batman protect their economic, political, social and cultural assets like many cities in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia in Turkey. In Batman, tribes are urbanized in economy, politics, social life, while tribes also tribalised every area of the city. From this point of view, this study aimed to understand the process of articulation of the Raman tribe to the city in Batman, which was formed by oil in the 1950s. Qualitative data collection techniques such as snowball sampling and in-depth interview were used in this study, which was conducted with 23 participants consisting of tribal leaders and tribal members. Qualitative findings such as local newspapers and official documents have also been referred in the study.
