Abstract (EN)

Aydede, dated 1922, owned by Refik Halid Karay, was the only opposition humor newspaper of the era. 90 issues were published nonstop; the theme of "women" is frequently included in these issues. In the collection of 90 issues, there are 34 columns titled "About Women" that we researched. In addition, almost every issue includes cartoons with the theme of women, and 219 cartoons of this nature have been included in our thesis. All of the 34 columns and cartoons with women's content -including the title, dialogue and explanation texts- were transcribed. There are important writers and intellectuals names like Orhan Seyfi, Halil Nihat, Fazıl Ahmed, Mahmud Sadık, Abdülbaki Fevzi, Yusuf Ziya, Selami İzzet, Ercüment Ekrem, Rıza Tevfik, Reşat Nuri, Ali Haydar, Mehmed Sıtkı, Güzide Sabri, Fahrünnisa Fahreddin, Kemaleddin, Osman Cemal, Enis Behiç, İdris Sabih, Burhanettin Ali, Mücella Fetanet, Ahmed Nurettin, Fahrettin Nazım, Selahattin Rıfat, Vedat Örfi, Yaşar Şadi in the writer staff of Aydede. The staff of illustrators is at least as wide as the staff of writers. It is possible to see to obtain very important information about the sense of humor, perception of women and image of the period in the newspaper. In the newspaper, women were often separated according to their lifestyle and formal characteristics; Women who are not eager to adapt to traditional and new life dynamics are idealized. The female figure, which is the subject of humor and criticism, is the "modern woman". These women are portrayed as the type who only likes to dress up, put on makeup, travel and spend money. In the cartoons, the satirized women are commodified. Apart from the "modern woman", -although not very often- female figures such as "young and naive girl", "ignorant woman" and "harasho's" can be encountered.
