Aydın Adnan Menderes University Medical Faculty internphysicians' knowledge and awareness levels about isolationprecautions

This study is a descriptive and quantitative study carried out between February 2020 and June 2020 in order to determine the knowledge and awareness levels of Aydın Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Medicine interns about isolation precautions and to develop recommendations in line with the results. The population of the research consisted of 101 intern physicians who studied at Aydın Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Medicine in the 2019-2020 academic year and participated in the research voluntarily. As a data collection tool, a questionnaire form consisted of three parts, prepared by the researchers was used. The first part of the questionnaire was consisted of six questions about personal information, the second part, 15 multiple-choice questions with one correct answer to evaluate the knowledge of interns on isolation measures, and the third part the questionnaire consisting of 18 items is a five-point Likert type scale to determine the compliance of interns with isolation measures. There are statements prepared in the form of scales. The questionnaires were administered by the researchers through face-to-face interviews and the trainees' approval was obtained. The results of the data in the research were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 program, descriptive statistical methods, Chi-square and Kruskal Wallis tests were used. P values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. More than 90% of trainees were familiar with isolation precautions, standard isolation precautions, hand hygiene, use of gloves, isolation methods figures for transmission, equipment used in contact isolation, and droplet-free infectious agents; It was observed that 50% of the patients did not know about the five indications of hand washing, protective equipment, infectious agents that do not require contact and respiratory isolation, the types of masks used in respiratory isolation with droplets, and the isolation method. Using a negative pressure chamber. In addition, the fact that almost all of the interns misunderstood the duration of surgical hand washing revealed their shortcomings in this regard. When the correct answers given by the interns to the information questions were analyzed by gender, the difference between the order of removing the protective equipment and the answers given to the question of the infectious agent that did not require contact isolation was found to be significant. When the correct answers given to the knowledge questions according to the academic achievement variable were examined, the difference between the duration of surgical hand washing and the answers to the infectious agent question that did not require contact isolation was found to be significant. In the light of the results of our study, it has been revealed that interns need more training on isolation precautions. For this reason, the knowledge levels of our physician candidates on isolation precautions should be reviewed, the subject of isolation methods should be included more in the education curriculum, and the knowledge of interns on isolation measures should be completed before graduation. on these issues in practical training.
