An approach to the modern Turkish novel within the framework of Bakhtin's theory of dialogism

Mikhail Bakhtin's (1895-1975) contribution to the literary field is with his theory of dialogism where form, discourse and content are handled with a holistic approach. "Dialogism" which emphasizes the double voiced nature of the rhetoric by examining the relation between the subject and the other; "polyphony" which allows the exploration of other voices in a discourse, questioning whether the characters are representative of their voice; " heteroglossia " which evaluates how literary, auditory, visual, artistic, scientific and rhetoric genres are placed into the novel and reveals different languages and discourses; "carnivalesque" which displays the reflection of the carnival that disrupts the hierarchical structure along with comic elements; form the basis of dialogism. This study highlights the dialogic relations in selected works from modern Turkish literature such as "Tutunamayanlar", "Tehlikeli Oyunlar", "Yenişehir'de Bir Öğle Vakti", "Kimse", "Yaz Sonu", "Yaşarken ve Ölürken", "Üç Beş Kişi", "Mektup Aşkları", "Ruh Üşümesi", "Kırık Deniz Kabukları." The novels are analyzed in terms of their linguistic, genre and discourse features, and "dialogism", "polyphony", "heteroglossia" and " carnivalesque " concepts are explored in the selected novels. Modern Turkish novel with its dominant dialogic characteristics has not been completely analyzed in terms of its content, style and genre. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relation between dialogism and modern Turkish novel through the novels examined.
