Bâkî's translation of El-i'lâm Bi-a'lâmi Beledi'llâhi'l-Harâm (Fezâ'il-i Mekke) : Review-critical edition

Bâkî, not only one of the most famous poets of 16th century but also of Turkish literature history has works written in prose form however he is mainly known for his Divan. These works are Fezâ'il-i Cihâd, Me'âlimü'l-yakîn fî-Sîreti Seyyidi'l-mürselîn and the translation of el-İ'lâm bi-A'lâmi Beledi'llâhi'l-Harâm which is mostly known as Fezâ'il-i Mekke. Apart from these, a work written in prose form named as Hadis-i Erbain is said to have been written by Bâkî but any example of this work has not shown up yet. All of these religious works in prose form were written through translation of different Arabic works. Some of these works except translation of el-İ'lâm bi-A'lâmi Beledi'llâhi'l-Harâm (Feza'il-i Mekke) have been subject to some ph.D theses. The translation of el-İ'lâm bi-A'lâmi Beledi'llâhi'l-Harâm (Feza'il-i Mekke) has not been studied yet except an article written by me. Bâki's work is the translation of Kutbeddin Muhammed bin Ahmed Mekkî en-Nehrevâlî's Arabic work el-İlâm bi-Alâmi Beledi'llâhi'l-Harâm while he was staying in Mecca as a qadi in 1579. Bâkî presented his translation with some poems to Sultan Murad the Third after being deposed from his post in Mecca. This work which gives information on the history of Mecca with a special attention Kaaba and The Umayyad Caliphate, Abbasids, Mamluks and especially the activities of the Ottoman sultans on the construction, repair and buildings that erected as a pious act in the city is consisted of one introduction, ten chapters and one epilogue. It is noticed that there are fifty-eight copies of the work in Turkey and abroad. While the introduction and epilogue parts of the work are written in natty expression and flowery language the other parts about the main subject of the work are written lean, plain and understandable Turkish. In our thesis, this work which had not been transcripted from Ottoman alphabet to the Latin alphabet was reviewed and evaluated in addition to critical edition based on three copies.
