n SUMMARY Doctoral Thesis The Activities of Greeks in Western Anatolia (İzmir and Surrounding Area) (1919-1922) Zafer ÇAKMAK Fırat University Institute of Social Sciences The Department of History Elazığ-2004, p: X+272 Anatolian Greeks are one of the minorities living under the Otoman rule. Greece started to spread by taking lands from Otoman State after it appeared as an independent state signed Mondros Armistice after having been defaeted at the First World War, the greeks living in Western Anatolia tried to annex that region to Greece. When Greece invaded Izmir in 15 May 1919, Anatolia killed Turks, pilaged their properties and forced them to migrate by gathering band of rebels. Greece sent Greek immigrants from Greece and Aegean Islands to gather Greek majority in Western Anatolia. The Greeks living in Western Anatolia lost their hopes and tried to estabilish an Ionian state as Greek Army failed in Sakarya War. The Anatolian Greeks had to leave Anatolia after Turkish Army started Great Attack against Greek Army.
