A research on the effect of communication skills of physical education teachers on leadership behaviours

When we thought about the effects of the teachers on students, we see that leadership and communication qualities have an important role. In this study, it is aimed to research the communication and leadership skills of physical education teachers.In this study, survey method which is one of the quantitative research techniques was used. The research was made on 341 (212 male, 129 female) physical education teachers who work at secondary and high schools in Gaziantep in 2015-2016 education period. In study, two types of scales was used as data collection tool. ''Leader Behaviour Description Questionnaire'' devised by Hemphill and Coones (1950) and introduced to Turkish by Önal (1979) and later re-adapted by Ergün (1981) was used to determine leadership level and 'leadership Skills Assessment Questionnaire'' devised by Korkut (1996) was used to determine the level of the physical education teachers. In the analysis of research data, Mann Whitney U test was used to compare the lower dimensions of binary groups, while Kruskal Wallis H test was used for scale lower dimension marks of multiple groups. Significant differences have ben found out in age, gender and professional experience variables. When research group's leadership and communication qualities have been compared in terms of age variable, it has been determined that physical education teachers at 41-45 and 45+ age group have a significantly higher leadership level of building structure than the other age groups (p<0, 05). When research group's leadership and communication qualities have been compared in terms of gender variable, it has been determined that male participants' leadership level of building structure has been significantly higher than the female participants' (p<0,05). It has been found out that the more the experience, the better the building structure aspect is.As a result, it can be said that leadership and communication level of physical education teachersat 41-45 and 45+ age group is higher than the other age groups, male physical education teachers have more leadership and communication qualities compared to female physical education teachers.
