Evaluation of the effect of online parenting education programme based on information, motivation, behavioural skills model on maternal and paternal attachment

This study was conducted as a parallel design, randomised controlled intervention study to evaluate the effect of online parenting education programme based on the Information, Motivation, Behavioural Skills (IMB) Model on maternal and paternal attachment. The sample of the study consisted of 104 couples (intervention group=51 couples, control group=53 couples). In the study, data were collected from the mothers through Personal Information Form-Mother, Prenatal Attachment Inventory (PAI), Maternal Attachment Inventory (MAI). Personal Information Form-Father, Intrauterine Father Attachment Scale (IFAS), Postnatal Paternal-Infant Attachment Questionare (PPAQ) were collected from fathers. In the information step of the model, online parenting training based on the IMB Model was given to intervention group couples between the 31st and 34th gestational weeks. In the motivation step, online individual counselling was provided to twice between the 36th-38th gestational weeks and between the postnatal 20th-40th days for intervention group couples. In the behavioural skills step, maternal attachment level was evaluated with MAI and paternal attachment level was evaluated with PPAQ in the third month after birth. No intervention was made to control group couples. İntervention group expectant mothers had higher PAI post-test mean scores than the control group expectant mothers, and the intervention group expectant fathers had higher IFAS post-test mean scores than the control group expectant fathers (p<0.05). Mean MAI score was higher in the mothers in the intervention group compared to the mothers in the control group, and the mean score was PPAQ higher in the fathers in the intervention group compared to the fathers in the control group (p<0.05). As a result of the study, online parenting education programme based on the IMB Model had a positive effect on maternal and paternal attachment
