Use of seismic base isolators in the building type adjacent structures

Recently, seismic isolation is used often for prevention of harmful effects of earthquakes to structures. Especially, buildings with special purpose use such as colleges, hospitals and bridges can be constructed with base isolators since it is necessary to have many people at the time of an earthquake and / or to use immediately after the earthquake. In this thesis, firstly, the effect of change of base isolator parameters on the collisions of adjacent buildings during an earthquake was examined and the general scope of the thesis was tried to be revealed. Lumped mass models of adjacent buildings with different floors were studied. Seismic responses in time domain have been solved by numerical integration method for non-isolated and isolated buildings. The seismic responses under the effect of various isolator parameters were obtained and the results were interpreted. Thus, the study is tried to be a reference for the researchers familier with the subject. In the next section of the thesis, the school building (Salihli Science College), which is already built and consists of three adjacent buildings, is modeled with the SAP2000 program. Since the structure is actually without isolators, first of all, analyzes are carried out in this state and earthquake responses and pounding forces are obtained. Then, suitable base isolator characteristics were determined and placed in the building and the seismic analysis was carried out to investigate the pounding situations. The pounding forces between buildings are calculated using a nonlinear elastic spring model (Hertz model). Poundings between adjacent buildings, during earthquakes have been investigated. As result, closer naturel period values of buildings can prevent structural poundings, since the seismic isolators change the natural period of the structures attached.
