İnvestigation of reliability and validity of turkish version of calgary sleep apnea quality of life i̇ndex

People with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), sleep quality deteriorates as a result of apnea hypopnea events, oxygen desaturation and interruption of sleep cycles. It adversely affects many systems in the body, especially the nervous system. It has serious cardiovascular and metabolic consequences. The prevalence of OSAS in our country is estimated to be %0.9-1.4. The 'Calgary Sleep Apnea Quality of Life Index' was developed by Flemons and Reimer to assess health-related quality of life in people with OSAS. The aim of this study was to investigate the Turkish validity and reliability of the scale, which we translated into our language as "Calgary Uyku Apnesi Yaşam Kalitesi İndeksi"(CUAYKİ). 311 participants with OSAS were included in the study. All participants completed the Short Form-36 Quality of Life Scale to assess overall quality of life, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to assess daytime sleepiness and the Turkish translation of the CUAYKİ to assess health-related quality of life. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used for construct validity and Spearman correlation coefficient was used for concordance validity. Spearman correlation coefficient was used for test-retest reliability. Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was also used for reliability. The statistical significance level was taken as 0.05. Of the patients included in the study, 46 (14.6%) were female and 265 (85.4%) were male. The mean age of the patients was 48.54±11.82 years, and the mean body mass index was 29.57±4.09 kg/m2. Confirmatory factor analysis goodness of fit values; The 'Goodness-of-Fit Index' was 0.626. the 'Comparative Fit Index' was 0.700. and the 'Root Mean Square Error of Approximation' was 0.119. Spearman correlation coefficients of daily functions, social interactions, emotional functions and symptoms sub-dimensions and total scale score of the CUAYKİ scale were found to be 0.953, 0.968, 0.942. 0.936 and 0.984. respectively. As a result of the validity and reliability analyzes, it was found that the scale had high reliability, but the construct validity could not be achieved. A weak negative correlation was found between the symptoms sub-parameter of the CUAYKİ scale and ESS (p<0.001). Health-related quality of life has recently gained importance. At the same time, the prevalence of OSAS is increasing. For this reason, it may be beneficial to bring the health-related quality of life scale into our language in OSAS. The clinical use of the scale may contribute to clinicians in terms of evaluations and treatment.
