Abstract (EN)

In this study, we survey the First National Architectural Period through the example buildings in Çanakkale and Balıkesir district. The study primarily focuses on historic and architectural features of the buildings, on whole reaching out the general attributes of the period.First National Architectural Period or called as Neo-Classic Turkish Style is an architectural movement or trend of late Ottoman Empire and early Republican Turkey that emerged between the beginnings of 1900?s and 1930?s thanks to Western Orientalism and ideology of nationalism against the alienated Ottoman architecture. This movement, supporting its ideology, reuses the traditional architectural elements such as derivatives of pointed arches, domed and diagonal conic roofed turrets, large eaves, tiles etc. of the Classic Turk-Islam architecture attaching them on modern structured western style buildings.Under our core topic, we have determined twelve highly featured example buildings of the period in Çanakkale and Balıkesir zone. Five of these are in provinces of Çanakkale and Balıkesir while seven others are in municipalities of Balıkesir. However, only eleven of these still stand either authentically or changed. These spread as follows; one in center of the city of Çanakkale, four in center of the city of Balıkesir, five in center of the town of Bandırma and the rest in centers of the towns of Havran and Edremit. The buildings were built mainly in early Republican period whether with a public or state budget. These buildings richly ornamented according to Classic Turk-Islam architecture were structured by architectural projects generally in large dimensions for public use.
