Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje's life, field works and thoughts

In this thesis, the life of the Dutch orientalist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), his orientalist mindset and the path he followed in his academic-political fields are discussed. Especially his educational background, his travel to Mecca and the consultancy process under the Dutch colonial administration in the Archipelago, known as Indonesia today, have been brought to the fore. At the same time, the relations between Aceh Dar es-Salaam Sultanate, which the Netherlands attempted to invade in connection with its activities in the Archipelago, and the Ottoman Empire and Pan-Islamist policy are also discussed within the scope of thesis. In line with these issues, it is aimed to understand the academic and political activities of this name, which is known as one of the founders of modern Islamic studies, by examining the educational structure at Leiden University. In this framework, it has been understood that it has gained an important place in the European academy with its approach to Islam and Muslims and the rational method it has adopted in academic studies. In addition, the relationship of the Ottoman Empire with Muslims in the Archipelago, a region far from Ottoman territories, and the nature of the effects of the Pan-Islamist policy on the Dutch colonial government, which plays a major role in these relations, have been understood.
