Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACT Retrospective Evaluation of Patients Followed and Treated with the Diagnosis of Acute Flask Paralysis in Children's Services Aim: In this retrospective study, it is aimed to identify the clinical and radiological findings, complications, treatment modalities and factors affecting the prognosis of patients who were followed up and treated with acute flask paralysis. Materials and Methods: In this study, a total of 64 patients diagnosed and treated with acute flask paralysis in Çukurova University Medical Faculty Child Health and Diseases Services between the years 2006 and 2016 were evaluated. . Results: Of the 64 patients, 47 (73.4%) were diagnosed with GBS and 17 (26.6%) with TM. Of the patients in the study group, 38 were males (59.4%), 26 were females (40.6%) and the ratio of males to females was 1 / 1.46. The average of age was 8.28±4.41 years. Patients with GBS and TM were studied separately. 29 (61.7%) of the GBS patients were male, 18 (38.3%) were female and the average of age was 7.94±4.49 years. 9 (52.9%) of the TM patients were male, 8 (47.1%) were female and the average of age was 9.24±4.16 years. Two months after discharge, 41 (64%) of the patients were completely recovered or had minor symptoms. Even tough requirement of respiratory support in GBS and TM patients and effect of IVIG treatment to prognosis in GBS patients are thought to be significant, gender, pre-existing infection status, infection type, cranial nerve involvement, autonomic symptom presence and in subtype prognosis in GBS patient were ineffective factors. The duration of stay in intensive care unit in GBS patients was 9.43±14.88 days and the total length of stay in hospital was 19.32±21.64. The duration of stay in intensive care unit in TM patients was 4,47±6,79 days and the total length of stay in hospital was 17,59±12,01 days. Autonomic symptom development in patients with GBS increased the duration of stay in the hospital while the need for respiratory support was found to increase the total length of stay in intensive care and hospital, in both GBS and TM patients. It was seen that the duration of stay in the hospital and intensive care unit was lower in GBS patients who received only IVIG treatment (p<0.01). Conclusion: While the need for respiratory support in GBS and TM patients is a poor prognostic factor, only IVIG therapy/treatment in GBS patients may be related with good prognosis. At the same time, it can be said that the development of autonomic symptom and respiratory support increase the length of stay in the hospital.
