Abstract (EN)

In this study, the relationship between life satisfaction and cognitive emotion regulation skills in individuals with childhood trauma was examined. The aim of my research, which shows that traumas acquired in childhood affect the life satisfaction of the person in adulthood and his skills in regulating his emotions, consists of measuring the extent to which childhood traumas affect the individual's life satisfaction and emotion regulation skills. Although there are studies in different fields that cover these issues separately in the literature, it is thought that this research will be productive and will close the gap in the literature, since there is no study in which all three issues are discussed together. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate whether emotion regulation skills have a mediating role on life satisfaction, which can often be seen in individuals with childhood trauma. The research was carried out with 455 participants aged 18-45 years. Sociodemographic Information Form, Childhood Mental Trauma Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale were applied to the participants who approved to participate in the study. In order to test the hypotheses of the research, the data were transferred to the statistical package program and independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson Correlation and multiple Regression Analysis were applied. According to the findings of the study, childhood traumas and cognitive emotion regulation difficulties were found in men, full-time workers, high school graduates, those who were cared for by someone other than their parents, those who stated that they had experienced a traumatic event in their childhood, those who stated that they could not control their emotions against the events, and those who were diagnosed with mental disorders. scores were found to be significantly higher. In addition, life satisfaction scores were found to be significantly higher in postgraduate graduates, women, part-time workers, those who were brought up by their parents, those who did not experience a traumatic event in childhood, those who stated that they could control their emotions against events, and those who did not have a diagnosis of mental disorder. According to the correlation findings, it was determined that the childhood traumas and cognitive emotion regulation difficulties scores of the young participants were higher. Childhood trauma sub-dimensions and total scores, life satisfaction and cognitive emotion regulation skills were negative; Cognitive emotion regulation difficulties were found to be positively and significantly related. When the predictors of life satisfaction were examined, it was found that emotional neglect, physical neglect and cognitive emotion regulation difficulties predicted life satisfaction negatively and significantly. When the predictors of cognitive emotion regulation difficulties were examined, it was found that physical and emotional neglect sub-dimensions significantly predicted cognitive emotion regulation difficulties. When the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between childhood traumas and life satisfaction was examined, it was determined that cognitive emotion regulation difficulties had a partial mediator role in the effect of physical and emotional neglect sub-dimensions on life satisfaction. The research findings contribute to the relevant literature in terms of examining the prevalence of childhood traumas in adults and related factors. It is thought that in future studies, supportive studies that will examine early life experiences and results can be carried out.
