Construction of the "Other" in main stream documentaries: The example of national geographic

Documentaries, in general, are works that are based on actualities. The foundations of documentaries lie in portraying life as it is. A good documentary succeeds in relaying the message of the documentarian to the audiences. Per their formulation under the guise of social constructs, documentaries have the same properties as historical documents. When documentaries are shot in exotic locales, the perception of alterity can rise. Thus, the reality which is re-introduced in such documentaries requires careful analysis. It can be inferred that the re-introduced reality is, fleeting. In this study, the constitution of alterity in main-stream documentaries is examined in the National Geographic example.
