The ruling period of the Democratic Party between 1950-1955, Democratic Party's relations with the press and the opposition

Since the proclamation of the republic in 1923, transition to a multiparty system has been tested. This was a must to better experience the democracy and stop ruling the country by means of a single party after implementing the multiparty system, which had been Atatürk's ideology. Transition to the multiparty system was first tested through Free Republican Party which was founded in 1930. However, these trials culminated in failure due to the absence of necessary conditions. This was because all the other parties except for CHP turned into a mass where people who were opposed to the republic and reforms gathered. In 1945, the transition to the multiparty system reoccurred and by the year 1946, those who left CHP founded the Democratic Party and became a very good opposition party for it. In fact, there was not a remarkable difference between CHP and DP. Democratic Party simply diverged from CHP in terms of its democratic statements and its support for liberalism in economy. Upon the triumph of the Democratic Party in the elections of 1950, multiparty system was initiated in real terms. Democratic Party's rule began and the single party's rule of almost 27 years finally came to an end. This thesis studies the ruling period of Democratic Party between 1950-1955 and its relations with the press, as well as with the opposition party.
