Abstract (EN)

Both onboard and at the port terminal, bulk shipment operations are high-risk activities. Moreover, coal shipments are one of the most dangerous and perilous cargoes shipped by sea, requiring particular understanding in terms of shipment, storage, and transportation. The IMSBC Code (International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes), developed by the IMO (International Maritime Organization), specifies and arranges specific recommendations for the safe loading and transportation of coal cargoes. It says that coal can self-heat and that some coals are vulnerable to this type, which can lead to spontaneous combustion. As a result, the primary goal of this research is to determine the underlying causes of self-heating/ignition onboard due to coal cargo traffic, develop a risk management strategy based on quantitative and qualitative risk evaluation, and apply FFTA (Fuzzy Fault Tree Analysis) principles to reduce the risk of self-heating/ignition onboard, and develop a risk management strategy focuses on quantitative and qualitative risk evaluation. An ET diagram is constructed under the supervision of six maritime professionals to accomplish quantitative risk analysis using the bow-tie approach by first addressing the initiating event, which was determined to be self heating/ignition during the loading, discharging operation and transportation. The qualitative fault tree of Self Heating/Ignition includes 16 intermediate events and 23 basic events (root causes), constituting it a comprehensive fault tree. This study is expected to offer a variety of benefits to the maritime sector and literature as the first implementation of FTA for self heating/ignition due to coal cargo in maritime shipping.
