Examination of the educational buildings in Dicle University campus area in the eye of a person with a disability

In the study, some buildings in Dicle University, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering and faculty of Architecture, are chosen to be examined. The architectural design of those buildings is investigated in the area of whether they provide adequate feasibilities to visually impaired and physically disabled persons to have equal education conditions with people with no disabilities. This study is conducted because of the reason that people with disabilities must possess equal rights with all human when using public areas. Therefore, to prevent any problems that might occur during the usage of public areas by a disabled person, universal design criterias for disabled people must be obeyed. In this regard, a comprehensive literature review had been conducted about the concept of disability, problems encountered by people with disabilities and design criterias for people with disabilities. To design educational buildings meeting the demands of design criterion for people having disabilities, some educational buildings in Dicle University, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering and faculty of architecture, have been examined. In those educational buildings, surveys are conducted and in order to identify the problems encountered by people with disabilities, educational buildings are examined and architectural problems about approachability and accessibility have been identified. In the second part of the study, considering the number of disabled people using those buildings, elaborate observations are done in the buildings which are chosen to be examined. Also, designs and plans of those buildings are examined. Afterward, in regard to the spatial designs for people with disabilities, the data obtained are examined. Consequently, to better visualize the suitability of the educational buildings to the universal design criterion, surveys conducted are evaluated percentage calculations. Thereafter, spatial design suggestions for the chosen faculties are presented in 1/50 scale drawings. The study, which was conducted in the educational buildings of Dicle University campus area, difficulties encountered by persons with disabilities will be VIII detected and as the approachability and accessibility to mush have criteria in the buildings are provided to people with disabilities, they will more easily contribute to the growth of the economy and scientific development of the country. Moreover, disabled persons will be socially and psychologically equal with healthy persons and will live more comfortable.
