The relationship of perceived social support level of diabetes patients with psychological health and perception of disease

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between perceived social support level in diabetes patients and psychological resilience and perception of illness. The sub-objectives of the study include the comparison of perceived social support, psychological resilience and perception of illness according to demographic variables. Within the scope of related purposes, the relational screening model was preferred in the conduct of this study. While the population of the study consisted of type II diabetes patients, the sample group consisted of 563 people selected from the population using the snowball technique. Within the scope of the research, Personal Information Form, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Brief Psychological Resilience Scale and Brief Illness Perception Scale were applied to the participants. In the analysis of the collected data, SPSS-25 statistical program was preferred and independent groups t test, anova and pearson correlation analysis were used. At the end of the study, while there were significant results in terms of perceived social support, psychological resilience and disease perception levels of diabetes patients according to gender, age group, marital status and being a chronic disease other than diabetes, no significant results were obtained in terms of the time elapsed after the diagnosis of diabetes. In addition, the perceived social support level in diabetes patients was positively related to psychological resilience; It was also found to be negatively correlated with the perception of illness. In addition, it was concluded that there is a negative significant relationship between psychological resilience and the perception of illness.
