Interpretation of hand-woven Uşak carpets in accordance with today's machine-made carpets

Turks have created cultural and artistic values in every region they have lived in, and have also enriched their own culture and understanding of life. For Turks, who have adopted a nomadic lifestyle for many years, every type of weaving has always had a vital value. The weavings that Turks produce for different purposes have left deep traces wherever they go. The most important of these is carpet weaving. Weaving has always remained valuable for Turks even after they have settled down. Weaving is done in almost all of Anatolia and is known for the characteristics specific to the region where it is done. Uşak is one of these regions. Carpets woven in Uşak, which have their own pattern, design, composition, color and material understanding, were initially woven for daily use, but the beauty and value of the carpets were noticed by foreigners and the path to opening up to the world began. Uşak province has become a prominent province due to its location on the intersection of the port road and the trade caravan roads. Carpets woven in Uşak have been exported to all parts of the world and have maintained their value for centuries. Although the influence of hand-woven Uşak carpets, which left their mark on a culturally and economically important period, has diminished over the years, they continue to maintain their importance all over the world today. With the development of technology, carpets began to be woven by machines and carpet weaving continued to maintain its value for our country. In this thesis, it is aimed to examine the characteristics of valuable hand-woven Uşak carpets, adapt them to today's machine carpet weaving and bring a different interpretation from a more current perspective. In the first part of this thesis consisting of four chapters; the historical, sociological and cultural structure of Uşak province is explained. In the second section, after the definition of carpet, the history of Turkish carpet making is summarized. The characteristics of hand-woven Ushaq carpets, the materials used, and design features are examined. In the third section, information is given about the history of machine carpet making in the world and in our country, the place and importance of Gaziantep in machine carpet making is explained, and the carpet machines used are examined. In the fourth section, new designs suitable for today's machine-made carpets were created based on hand-woven Uşak carpets in the light of this information.
