Determination of nurses' awareness of information security regarding the use of electronic health records

This research was conducted to determine nurses' awareness of information security regarding the use of electronic health records. This descriptive research was conducted between September 20 and October 20, 2021. The research population consisted of 807 nurses from two training and research hospitals in Ankara. The sample of the research consisted of 266 nurses. "Sociodemographic Data Form" and "Information Security Scale" were used as data collection tools. Data was collected online via Google Forms. The data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov Smirnov test, t-test, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Tukey test. Most participants were women (86.8%) and had bachelor's degrees (71.8%). Participants' Information Security Scale scores statistically significantly differed by computer use duration, gender, and age (p<0.05). Their Information Security Scale "organizational security" subscale scores statistically significantly differed by gender. Their Information Security Scale "security practices" subscale scores differed by the unit of duty, age, and education. Their Information Security Scale "access and authorization" subscale scores differed by computer use duration, age, and work experience. Their Information Security Scale "service delivery" differed by computer use duration, age, and work experience. It is seen that nurses can easily access patient information in the Hospital Information Management System and have the authority to read, write, and add on the data. They experience information security problems due to negligence, carelessness, lack of training, leaving screens on, and sharing passwords. According to this research, nurses' level of information security awareness is higher in women. There is an increase in awareness with an increase in computer use time and age. The results indicate that nurses should be provided with more training in information security.
