Beyond the disabilities: Ethnographic analysis of social and school life of mainstreamed students

Abstract (EN)

The purposes of this study are identifying the problems of mainstreamed students in areas of social life which includes school and classroom culture, and determining the deficiencies and effectiveness of mainstreaming. Pattern of this study is culture analysis (Ethnography / Ethnography) which is based on the observation of qualitative research methods. With this purpose, four students in order to the properties of their disability groups are followed by detailed observations of qualitative research data collection techniques, the data obtained from field notes and supported by interviews with mainstream class teachers. The collected data were analyzed with using content analysis method. As a result of analysis procedures, themes and sub-themes were found. In summary, as result of analysis of the data, the following were founded:Students with special needs in implementation of mainstreaming education enjoyed being in the same environment with 'normal' students, the development of socialization of the students that come through the adaptation process with their peers in terms of the integration phase has been observed. The selection and application of appropriate activities of classroom teachers provided more than willing to be successful for mainstreamed students. When school, family, teachers and school administration?s duties on mainstreaming education fully made, mainstreaming education?s aim is achieved in a visible way.The primarily related problems of mainstreaming education are the peer acceptance and wrong practices of course activities. In this research; it can be seen that mainstreaming class teachers is inadequate in practice. For this reason, informing the mainstreaming class teachers about the mainstreaming and giving successful in-service training for classroom activities are necessary.Key Words: Primary School Teacher, Special Education, Inclusive Education, Ethnographical Study.
