The relationship between digital game addiction and communication skills in adolescents

Adolescence is a period in which individuals develop in biological, psychological and social aspects and turn into adults. It is very important for healthy individuals and societies to develop adequate skills in adolescence and to reach adulthood. Digital game addiction spreads rapidly among young people, causing an increase in screen time and a decrease in socialization. For this reason, the relationship between digital game addiction and communication skills of high school students was the focus of this study. The universe of the study consists of high school students studying in Mersin. As a sample, 300 students from different types of schools were reached. In the study, data were collected using the sociodemographic data form, Digital Game Addiction Scale (DOBÖ-7) and Communication Skills Inventory (IDI). As a result of the research, a negative relationship was found between digital game addiction and communication skills. In addition, a significant difference was found between gender, high school type, high school entry score, and no significant difference was found between mother's employment status, father's employment status, the number of siblings and monthly income and digital game addiction. A significant difference was found between gender, number of siblings, monthly income, type of high school, high school entrance score and communication skills, but not with the mother's employment status and father's employment status.
