Investigation of the relationship between parental attitudes and social anxiety in adolescents

The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between parental attitudes and social phobia in adolescents. This research is a descriptive study, and the relational survey model, which is one of the general survey models, was used in the research. The research group is adolescents between 13-18 years old, residing in the Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul and studying in the public (Beylikdüzü Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, Cemalettin Tınaztepe Secondary School) and private schools (Beylikdüzü Private Science Life Schools) attending the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11thand 12thgrades. While selecting individuals between the ages of 13-18 residing in Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul province, convenient sampling, which is one of the non-probability sampling methods, was used. In the study, data were obtained by using the Sociodemographic Data Form, the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and the Parental Attitude Scale. In the study, the scores obtained from the personal information form and scales were coded through the SPSS program. Some data has been omitted from the coding since they containerrors. The remaining data were checked in accordance with the research hypotheses. After the controls, the variables of the research were determined relationally according to their types. Comparative analyzes of the determined categorical variables and correlational analyzes between the variables were used. According to the results obtained in our research, it has been determined that Adolescents Social Anxiety scores increase as the sub-dimensions of the Parent Attitude Scale such as Control/supervision, fear of negative evaluation, social avoidance of new situations and feeling uneasy increase.
