Abstract (EN)

In this doctoral thesis, the understanding of the state, traditions and customs of Turks during the period between the prehistoric times and the time of accepting Islam are being examined. These traditions and ceremonies have been grouped as the following: the state life, military, social, economic and religious traditions and ceremonies.Turk?s State life are ascending the throne, reigning and sovereignty symbols, orun and ülüş, building and usage of the capital, state councils, monumental tombs, liability and responsibility symbols, and sending and accepting envoys.The military activities include driving a hunt, cutting and binding horse tail, `yada? stone, sending salt and bread, sending bows and arrows, playing drums and pipes, symbol of surrender and obedience, and the names, titles and nicknames related to military success.The family and kinship, the name giving, weddings and marriage, toy, scattering coins, wheat, corns,etc. at a wedding and festivals, feast, blood brotherhood, and ant, races and games, not pulling the sword in peace time, respect for women, gospitality are the essentials of the Turkish social life.Turkish economic life contain plateaus, barracks and coming back (follow grass and water), feeding certain features animals (ala yunt), stamping animals, exchanging procedures, border markets.Religious traditions consist of making korıgan, balbal, praying, sacrificing, greeting sun and moon, respect for ancestors and loyalty (the cult of ancestors), the role of cams, not polluting the water, fortune telling, Yog meal (dead meal) , the graves with personal belongings and food, (as a means of purifying) fire, mourning and burial (Yog ceremony), mummification of the bodies.Throughout this thesis, the roots of Turk?s traditions and their contributions to society are examined. Turks saw that they could survive by protecting these ceremonies and traditions. Central Asia's climate and natural conditions affected Turkish state life, life style, customs and religious traditions.
