The analysis of marital adjustment in terms of personality traits and empathic tendency

The main purpose of this research is to revealing the relation between the marital adjustment of married couples and their empathic tendency and personality traits. This research also intends to seek for significant relations between marital adjustment and sex, age, the way couples got married, duration of marriage and education status. Two hundred married couple attended to research who lived in Turkey-Adana and chosen randomly according to the voluntary basis. Being still married and living with their partners were taken into account when the couples were selected. "Personal Information Form" used for socio-demographic information. For marital adjustment "The Marital Adjustment Scale", for personality information "The Personality Test Based of Adjectives" and for empathy potential "Empathic Tendency Scale" was used. As a result of this research, a negative and significant relationship between the marital adjustment of married couples and emotional instability; a positive and significant relationship between marital adjustment of married couples and extraversion, docility, empathic tendency was found. Besides, according to socio-demographic information, negative and significant relationship have been found between the marital adjustment of married couples and duration of marriage and age. However, no significant relationship has been found between marital adjustment and other socio-demographic information like sex, having a child, number of children, the way couples got married, working status, education status, income rate.
